JERUSALEM — A metal
tube laser deemed more ver-
satile than the traditional
glass tube model has been
developed by physicists at
Hebrew University.
Prof. Pinhas Avivi, asso-
ciate professor of experimen-
tal physics, and Prof. Felix
Dothan, associate professor
of applied physics, began
working on the new laser in
1969. Previously, gas lasers
could only be constructed
with glass tubes, which were
prone to breakage under
stress.
A gas laser operates by
sending an electric current
from an anode to a cathode,
which then creates an elec-
trical discharge in the gas in
the laser tube. If the laser
tube is made of metal the

NEW YORK—The U.S. De-
partment of Defense has re-
vised the "Religion or Na-
tional Origin" section of its
equal employment opportun-
ity manual in accordance
with suggestions made by
the Anti-Defamation League
of Bnai Brith.
Lawrence Peirez, chairman
of the league's civil rights
committee, commended the
Defense Department "for act-
ing so promptly."
The new instructions read
". . . Any evidence of dis-
crimination on the basis of
religion or national origin
will be explored thoroughly
sought as aggressively as in
and remedial action must be
the case of any other form
of discrimination."

solved this problem by mak-
ing the discharge tube out of
short sections, separated by
insulating spacers. This pre-
vents short circuits, allowing
the laser to function proper-
ly.

Its advantage over the
glass-housed models is its
ability to withstand shocks
and bumps, permitting it to
be attached to mobile equip-
ment.
The laser is now being pro-
duced commercially by Is-
rael Electro-Optical Industry,
Ltd., of Rehovot, under li-
cense from the Yissum Re-
search Development Co. of

In notifying the ADL of the
change, Stuart Broad, the
Defense Department's direc-
tor for equal opportunity, said
that the Defense Department
which enforces the executive
order on equal employment
opportunity, "will carry out
OFCC 'Guidelines on Dis-
crimination Because of Reli-
gion and National Origin'."
Under federal regulations,
if a corporation manufactures
just one item for the govern-
ment, the equal opportunity
provisions of its contract are
enforceable in all its facil-
ities, including the corporate
headquarters, sales offices,
and research laboratories.
