Latin Jews to Start Increasing Aliya

certain conditions have de-
veloped which must be con-
sidered in planning the aliya.
"We have witnessed a situ-
ation whereby only 2,000 out
of 5,000 Jews who emigrated'
from Chile came to Israel.
This caused us to reach cer-
tain conclusions aimed at
achieving a better absorption
pattern for immigrants from
these countries," she said.
The new plan is based on
special projects for Latin
American immigrants in the
1 southern parts of Israel. One
project calls for the settle-
ment of 100 families in in-
dustrial centers in the Raffah

Latin Americans in Israel
has started a campaign in
conjunction with the Jewish
Agency and the absorption
ministry to bring 10,000 im-
migrants from Latin America
in the next three years in
addition to the normal aliya
from that continent.

Mrs. Geula Havkin, chairman
of the association, said that

Irrigation Studies Are Aided by Computer

REHOVOT—Sixty per cent
of the water normally used
in irrigation has been saved
in computer-aided field stu-
dies now being conducted in
Northern Sinai by a team
of Israeli soil and irriga-
tion experts, it was announc-
ed by Prof. Achi Brandt,
head of the Weizmann Insti-
tute's pure mathematics de-
partment.
Prof, Brandt receives in-
formation obtained from the
field experiments and trans-
lates it into data which is
fed into the institute's Golem
computer in order to obtain
mathematical descriptions of

water flow patterns in the
soil.
