State Civil Service
to Issue New Exam

Dr. A. Martin Lerner, chief
of the Hutzel Hospital depart-
ment of medicine, in a recent
article urged physicians to
comply with a 1970 amend-
ment to the Public Health
Service Act whereby an or-
ganization was set up to de-
velop methods of assessing
physicians' performance.
Writing in "Medical Opin-
ion," Dr. Lerner suggested
that doctors be reviewed at
least every 10 years. "Spe-
cialists would be reviewed by
their peers, general phys-
icians by theirs," he wrote.
The Wayne State Univer-
sity professor of medicine
said that physicians should be
reviewed by patient case his-
tories and not by written
tests which some medical so-
cieties require for recertifi-
cation.
