Conservative Body Wants Arbitration in Ouster

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
joint placement commission
of Conservative Judaism has
approved unanimously a rec-
ommendation that Dr. Stuart
E. Rosenberg, ousted rabbi
of Beth Tzedec Synagogue of
Toronto, and the Conserva-
tive congregation board sub-
mit to binding arbitration on
whether the rabbi was dis-
missed for cause, according
to a commission spokesman.
Rabbi Rosenberg an-
nounced last month that he
was seeking a rabbinical tri-
bunal (bet din) to arbitrate
his contract suit against the
board of governors for $750,-
000 he felt was due him
under his contract.
He also said then he was
nning to proceed with a
Lift action against eight
members of the synagogue
board for $1,750,000 for an
alleged conspiracy against
him. He was dismissed last
January after a dissident
group of congregants won
control of the board in an
election.
The synagogue board had
previously informed the joint
placement commission i t
would accept arbitration by
a three-member panel, to be
made up of one person
chosen by the board, one by
Rabbi Rosenberg and the
third by the board and by
the rabbi.
The board specified, in its
proposal, that the authority
of such an arbitration panel
be limited only to the ques-
tion of whether Rabbi

cause, and, if the finding was
that he was not fired for such
reasons, that the panel would
consider only the question of
damages and not the issue
of restoration of Rabbi
Rosenberg to the Beth
Tzedec pulpit.

ment commission, at an all-
day meeting here, supported
