Basically, the rabbis in the Talmud have derived this from a verse in the Bible where boiling a kid in its mother's milk (Exodus 23: 19) (Exodus 34:26) (Deut. 14: 21) (Chulin 113A) is prohibit- ed. Those who are concern- ed with supplying reasons for Biblical commandments offer a number of explana- tions. Some contend that meat and dairy products are two different species in the creation. Mixing the two would be erasing the iden- tity of the species. This would be contrary to the de- sign of the Cr e a t o r who created every species ex- pecting each to retain its identity. The Kabalists con- tend that to mix meat and dairy products would be a means of denying the Al- mighty's design in creating the world. Others claim that harmony of man's own being would be upset. Some even try to indicate that there would be a sort of chemical reaction. There are also those who contend that man would abort moral perfection because the discipline of keeping the two kinds of food apart leads to man's holiness. There are also those who contend that milk is a by-product of the blood and eating milk and meats would be like eating blood with meats. Even cooking the two to- gether is prohibited even if one doesn't eat the mixture. The language of the pro- hibition in the Torah is actu- ally phrased by stating the law against cooking the kid in its mother's milk. Some indicate that this used to be a means of idol worship. Thus, Jews are prohibited from imitating this practice. Others claim that this is an act of cruelty because it would dull the sensitivity of the human heart by actual- ly destroying the mother and the child together in one gulp or in one pot. The poll showed that 16 per cent of adults said they dis- approved of marriages be- tween Catholics and Protes- tants and between Jews and non-Jews. The figure in 1968 was 28 per cent. A larger proportion — 67 per cent — now approve of Catholic- Protestant marriages than between Jews and non-Jews- 56 per cent. Three cassettes are avail- able for the fall holiday period—Selihot, High Holy Days and Sukkot. The cas- settes contain descriptions of the occasions and liturgical melodies related to the spe- cial days as a guide to the services. Ambulatory Jewish pa- tients in VA hospitals usually participate in services. At some military posts, leave will be granted to permit men to travel home for the holidays while a number of men will be offered home hospitality in local communi- ties. At TEMPLE ISRAEL, we hold to the philosophy that each Jewish Con- gregation has its own special emphasis that makes it unique and distinct; At TEMPLE ISRAEL, we believe that every family in the Jewish com- munity should belong to a Congregation, not only for what he receives in the way of services, but for what he can give by way of support— both financial and personal—to the principal instrument of Jewish sur- vival in his community; At TEMPLE ISRAEL, we recognize Judaism as a way of life to be nurtured in the home and sustained in the synagogue; At TEMPLE ISRAEL, we maintain that prayer is one of mankind's most exquisite expressions of faith in God and concern for his fellow man, but we also believe that prayer need not be dull and expressionless, that it should take on new forms through vocal and instrumental music, through dance and interpretive expression and through other forms of experimentation; At TEMPLE ISRAEL, we feel deeply the need to educate both our chil- dren and ourselves. Our children are educated in a Religious School graded from pre-kindergarten (age 4) through High School (12th Grade) and in a Hebrew Department which offers a minimum of four years of training for Bar and Bat Mitzvah, but which also provides nine years of Hebrew study for the serious student! At TEMPLE ISRAEL, we recognize the equality of the sexes, holding that worship and study, participation and planning, are roles for man and woman, boy and girl; At TEMPLE ISRAEL, we are concerned for the Family, and we arrange Shabbat Dinners, Sabbath Worship, Holiday programs and social activ- ities (even a Congregational Picnic) to involve families in doing things together Jewishly; At TEMPLE ISRAEL, we like to think that we create a feeling of warmth and friendship, not only through congregational events but by way of vibrant affiliate groups such as our Sisterhood, Brotherhood, Couples Club, Young Marrieds and Youth Group.
