National Heroism

Almost all peoples know
how to die heroically in a
crisis. But to resist step by
step over a period of two
hundred years, as the Jews
did, without turning to the
extreme of revolt, to resist
now violence, now seduction,
to let themselves neither be
crushed by threats of Cali-
gula not be tempted by the
splendor of Herod, who
sought to introduce into Judea
the temples, circuses and
arts of Greece, to have be-
fore their eyes the example
of a whole world yielding,
and yet themselves not yield-
ing, that is the acme of
national heroism! — Samuel
Ustazade Silvestre de Sacy,
in "Varietes Litteraires, Mor-
ale et Historiques."

stay properly aloof. Israel
will provide no financial sup-
port, and the university's
organizing committee believe
they will gain adequate fund-
ing and academic coopera-
tion from the Arab world and
private international groups.
The paucity of opportuni-
ties for higher education
among residents of the west
bank and Gaza has been one
of the most distressing long-
term inhibitions against real-
ization of Palestinian nation-
al pride and identity. For
too long, concerned citizens
and governments in the West
have tended to regard the
proud Palestinians as wards
of the international commu-
nity, deserving only of refu-
gee relief. The west bank
university now gives prom-
ise of becoming a focal point
for an emerging Palestinian
social infrastructure moti-
vated by future development
rather than past bitterness.

to Homosexuality

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright 1973, JTA, Inc.)

In the Bible homosexuality
is outlawed and declared to
be most undesirable (Lev.
20:13) (Lev. 18:22).
The fact that the Bible out-
laws it indicates that the
Bible was aware of its exist-
ence among other people.
Homosexuality is consid-
ered a violation of the will of
the Almighty who created
mankind as a "male and fe-
male" specie. This is why
the Book of Genesis makes
it a point to describe crea-
tion of man and his mate-
- woman.
woul d,
Homosexuality
therefore, be considered un-
natural. Whatever is unnat-
ural obviously defeats the
purpose of the Creator.
Jewish tradition, therefore,
regards homosexuality not
merely as an ordinary sin
but also as an abominable
act on the part of man.
