Arthur Miller OKs His Play at U-M

Ann Arbor for a brief stay
this fall to conduct seminars
and return in the spring
term during the rehearsal
period. Miller was recently
appointed adjunct professor
in residence in theater at the
university.
The University Players'
playbill opens Oct. 10-13 with
George Bernard Shaw's
"Saint Joan," in the Power
Center.
Subscriptions for the 1973-
74 season are on sale on a
mail-order-only basis now
through Oct. 1.

Arthur Miller, who won the
Pulitzer Prize for "Death of
a Salesman" and numerous
Tony Awards as well as
Drama Critics Circle Awards,
has granted permission to
the University Players of
the University of Michigan
speech communication and
theater department to pre-
miere his play, "The Amer-
ican Clock," as part of its
major playbill for 1973-74.
"The American Clock,"
which calls for a cast of 30
to 40, will premiere in the
U-M Power Center for the
Performing Arts April 24-27.

its heritage to the far cor-
ners of the world.
Because of the great in-
terest in the early issues of
Israel, the ministry of posts
is bringing out three souve-
nir sheets for the exposition
that will reproduce the rare
high value stamps of the
state's first issue.
The Independent Travel'
Service of Los Angeles is
scheduling a tour which will
cover the exposition. A bro-

Israel held its first Na-
tional Stamp Exposition one
year after the formation of
the state. A souvenir sheet
also issued at that time by
the Israel Postal Ministry
sold at the exposition for 100
p r u t a, approximately 50
cents U.S. curency. Today
its value is $90.

collectors from all over the
world will head to Jerusa-
lem for the government-
sponsored 1973 International
Philatelic Exposition Dec.
17-25.
According to Israel I. Bick,
Los Angeles philatelist spe-
cializing in Israeli stamps,
collectors of Israel stamps in
the United States are con-
stantly growing in number.
The total cost in Israel of
the first issue of nine differ-
ent stamps was 1,853 pruta,
Israeli coinage at that time,
approximately $9 then in
U.S. currency. The current
selling price is over $500: A
full set of sheets of these
nine different first coin
stamps. costing $450 at the
time of issue, sell today for
at least $40,000.

book "Gershwin: His Life
and Music" by Charles
Schwartz.
The 75th anniversary of
Gershwin's birth will be cele-
brated beginning Sept. 26,
and there are many aspects
of his life and work that are
practically unknown, several
decades after his death in
1937.

Schwattz's "G ershwi n,"
with an introduction by Leon-
ard Bernstein, traces the com-
poser's life from childhood
through his evolution as writ-
er of Broadway and Holly-
wood musicals and symphon-
ic and operatic works.

Many myths about Ger-
shwin's personality, intelli-
g e n c e, musicianship and
prowess with the ladies are
laid to rest. Also explored
are Gershwin's career drives,
his compulsive yet generally
unsuccessful a t t e m p t s to
study with name musicians,
his psychological problems,
his frequenting of brothels
and his relations with women
and his family. The claim by
an Alan Gershwin that he is
the composer's illegitimate
son is openly discussed, too.
