Dramatic Story: Resistance "Resistance" has become a subject of major concern in libertarian circles. While the debate continues over the re- sistance against Nazism in the World War crisis, a new experience involving a noted poet assumes significance. From the night of the colonels' coup in Athens to the day of his release from the 0 r o p o s concentration camp t h r e e years later, "Journal of Resistance," a Coward, McCann and Geoghe- gan book, records for all time the impassioned and eloquent statement of moral and phys- ical resistance to the Greek dictators by Mikis Theodora- kis, legendary hero, poet, composer of the music for the award-winning film, "Z." Partisan, patriot and artist, Theodorakis was a marked man from the moment the colonels overthrew the legiti- mate government. Hunted, he was forced to go under- ground; famous, he had to disguise himself. For five months he rallied resistance against the dictatorship until soldiers arrested him in the middle of the night. But he survived. He en- dured more than 40 days in solitary confinement; he suf- f e r e d torture, humiliation and anguish over the fate of his family and friends; but he refused to renounce his beliefs, and the Greek junta refused to bring his case to trial: "my persecutors know better than anyone else, that I might let out truths that would be better not heard." Not only did the military regime fail to crush his spir- it, it succeeded in triggering a new cycle of poems, "Sun and Times," in defense of human liberty. Theodorakis told Col. Ladas, the prison warden: "You have tanks. I have songs. Your misfor- tune is that the Americans haven't yet invented a tank that can kill songs! I am stronger than you, because time wears out tanks but makes songs stronger." The colonel sent him to a more isolated prison. The authorities ordered him to the concentration camp of Oropos. But even behind the barbed wire, Theodorakis re- fused to be silent. He wrote manifestos; he composed songs; and he worked with the prisoners to sharpen their politic al consciousness. Weakened by hunger strikes, 22—Friday, September 7, 1973 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEW' torture and anguish, his health finally failed. Against his wishes, he was trans- ferred to the prison hospital, where he was tortured once again. And once again he re- fused to accede to the colo- nels' demands. Theodorakis off e r s the world the extraordinary ac- count of his struggle against the tyranny of the colonels' regime. "Journal of Resis- tance" is an eloquent and impassioned witness to hu- man liberty, and at the same time a modern Greek trag- edy. Studded throughout with the songs and poems which Theodorakis composed in prison, this book is not only the record of a true rebel, but also the work of an artist who refuses to con- sider himself apart from his people. His book was translated from the French by Graham Webb. • TELEPHONE ANSWERING SERVICE • SECRETARIAL, GENERAL AND LEGAL HOURS: 9 to 5 MONDAY THRU FRIDAY 1740 W. By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX (Copyright 1973, JTA, Inc.) Why are Jews not permit- ted to eat bees and yet to eat honey that comes from the bees? A number of answers are given in rabbinical litera- ture. First, it is claimed that the bees actually do not make the honey. They sim- ply collect the material from one source and deposit it elsewhere. Second, even if they do process the honey in some way, it is claimed that the product is not a part of the bee. Some authorities assume that honey is permit- ted because the land of Is- rael is described as a land of "milk and honey." This last point is not uni- versally accepted because some claim that the honey referred to in the Bible is that which comes from the dates of the palm trees.
