Avraham of the Isralom Israel head- quarters has been named Midwest representative. Visiting with Zionist and community leaders here to outline the Isralom program, Avraham explained, Tues- day, that the growing in- terest among American Jews to establish their "home away from home" programs in Israel has in- spired the formation of this enterprise. "It is already bringing im- pressive results and many are establishing homes in Israel," Avraham said. He indicated an interest in the enterprise in some Detroit quarters. During 1972, its first full year in operation, Isralom helped more than 600 fam- ilies from abroad acquire residences in Israel, Avra- ham reported. These pur- chases are said to have total- led more than $15,000,000. In all, approximately 1,500 apartments were sold in foreign currency throughout Israel last year. To meet this new trend Isralom has directed its ef- forts to two types of buyers. The first group includes many professionals and re- tired couples who plan to settle in Israel in the future. Gree nfield NEW YORK (JTA)—Three Jewish policemen have been assigned to carry out the first recruiting campaign in the history of the New York City police department to increase the tiny proportion of Jews in the force. Among the 29,000 New York's "finest," there are currently only 806 Jewish men and women, which adds up to 2.7 per cent of the total. The total number of Jews in the city is around 2,000,000, or about 23.2 per cent of the total city population. It is easy to see discrimina- tion in those figures and, in fact, Joel Frankel, president of the Shomrim Society of New York City, the socio- religious organization of Jew- ish police officers, did make that charge in July. Party in response to criti- cism over the small number of Jewish police officers and partly in an effort to reach young adults in all sections of New York's fantastially variegated population, Police Commissioner Donald F. Cawley introduced this sum- mer a new approach to re- cruitment methods. College-trained Jewish po- licemen were added to the recruiting department, headed by Captain Michael J. McNulty. The assignment for police officers Lewis A. Berns. Barry J. Lichtenstein and George Drucker, is to try to reach as many young Jews as possible to inform them of "the excellent career op- portunities" in the police de- partment. They have visited or re- ceived assurances of cooper- ation from Jewish organiza- tions.
