An Historic Note:

In the inaugural address, at the opening of Bar-
Ilan University' 16 years ago, the late Dr. Pinhas
Churgin said in part:

"The political crisis, the security crisis, con-
fronting Israel, should not and cannot become a
deterrent in the development there of institutions
of learning. The strength of the future of Israel
is not confined to one region of life only, namely,
its material development. The importance of the
cultural and spiritual development of the country
needs no particular elaboration. It must go hand
in hand with the material development of the
country. Unfortunately, the process of the rebirth
of the sovereign Jewish people on its sacred soil
must proceed in circumstances of crises, but pro-
ceed it must."
