[ New Tel Aviv Bus Station: World's Largest By MOSHE RON Jewish News Special Israel Correspondent TEL AVIV—Bus compan- ies boycotted a new central bus station 36 years ago, de- claring there would not be enough passengers for such a large station. Now this sta- tion has become much too small for the heavy city traffic and large numbers of passengers, creating a ma- jor problem for municipal engineers responsible for the city's traffic. Four years ago, Arye Pilz, together with the "Egged'' bus company and the "Solel Boneh" building company, began construction of a new central bus station on the corner of Levinsky and Sal- ame streets. It will connect Tel Aviv with other'parts of the country and will become the largest bus station in the world. 11511111111ThMilInIMMIMMIIIIMMEIM Mimm For Your Accounting and Tax Work PROFESSIONALLY PREPARED Call Erwin Waldman at 968-3493 In the times of the British Mandate, Pilz and his family lived at 81 Hayarkon Street, Tel Aviv. Hagana leaders held their secret meetings at his home and prepared plans to defend the population against Arab attacks. In the same house was a well known cafe, frequented by British soldiers and members of the secret police, who searched the premises several times for hidden arms. After World War II, Pilz built some big houses, with arcades, • and the El Al Build- ing in Ben Yehuda Street, and is now developing the large Dizengoff Center. According to plan, the Cen- tral Bus Station in Tel Aviv will be completed by 1974. There will be 150 departure points and 20,000 buses will be catered to each day. The 45-dunam area of the bus station will be surround- ed by seven-story office blocks. The passengers will reach departure plaiforms by escalator. There will he bridges for incoming and outgoing traffic. Outside the bus stop, lux- urious shops and restaurants are being built, as well as a cinema, a business center, art galleries and a synzi- gogue. Israeli and foreign Jews have bought shops in this area for more than $16,000,- 000. Those who bought shops five years ago, have tripled their investment. Arye and Abraham Pilz and the Egged spokesman, Mordehai Shifman, say this bus station is planned for traffic until the year 2000. When Egged built a new modern central bus station in Beersheba 10 years ago, it left two platforms open for traffic with Hebron and Cairo. At the time people queried the wisdom of this decision but now there is al- ready a bus line between Beersheba and Hebron. The Tel Aviv taxi com- panies are demanding that the old central bus station is put at their disposal, but this has been refused by the bus companies Egged and Dan. The building of the new bus station has been delayed for a year due to lack of quali- fied workers and cement. Arye and Abraham Pilz hold 50 per cent of the shares, Egged 35 and Solel Boneh 15 per cent of the company that owns the new central bus station.
