The workbook is help- ful here, with sections on peace and freedom and reference to such questions as conversion to Judaism and the appropriate obser- vance of Hanuka in a Chris- tian society. Perhaps the most notable chapter in the book is that on Jesus. For a Jewish teacher to relate the events of that period without rancor is no less vital than is the Proper teaching about Jews in the Catholic catechism. Recognizing that Jewish youngsters are as ignorant of the facts of that era as are Christian youngsters. Soloff relates Jesus' life and death. and points out that the Romans, not the Jews, were responsible for Jesus' crucifixion. The good teacher will not leave it to the book and workbook alone to teach his- tory, but will encourage stu- dents to visit art museums and libraries to learn still more about the first 2,000 years. of Jewish life and the histories of people who lived at the time. Certainly the parent who has long forgotten—or never knew — Jewish history will enjoy sneaking a peak at Soloff's "The Covenant People." C.D. Giant of Science Kills a Killer By DAVID SCHWARTZ (Copyright 1973, JTA, Inc.) Last week saw the passing of' a man who nabbed one of the greatest killers of history. Dr. Selman Waksman was the discoverer of the anti- hiotic Streptotmycin. the first successful medicine to deal with tuberculosis. Dr. Waksman was born in Kiev a nd emigrated to the United States in 1910. He got his first lob in America working on a farm in Metuchen, N. J. TAter Ville going to Rutgers College, 1w got work at the college - laboratory earning 20 cents an hour. Nowadays we don't hear much of tuberculosis, but s.weral decades bark. the etory was suite different. People with tuberculosis Were sent to high moun- tainous regions. where the open air and altitude seemed to afford some transient re- lief. but never a cure. Th. disease did not dis- criminate as to race, color or status. George Washing. ton's brother, Lawrence, died of it. So did Thoreau. So did the Russian writer Chekhov and the, Yiddish poet Ye- hoash. Dr. Waksman, an author- ity on microbiotics discov- ered , a microbe-produced chemical which brought the virtual end of this great killer. * * One of the greatest insti- tutions of America is being threatened by the rise in prices. We refer to the hamburger. Some people say America will not be America without the hamburger. We realize the deep attachment of many I to it and concede some of its virtues, but somehow we are not too distressed. Why cannot the Israel burger take the place of the hamburger? The Israel burger is, of course, falafel, sold on the street corners of Israel as hamburgers are in America. Falafel has no meat but it has peas, which are just as good, combined with rice and other vegetables and is heavily spiced. It has the protein of the hamburger without the fat of the hamburger so it has less of the substance producing cholesterol. Preaching and Practicing In our country we have those three unspeakably prec- ious things: freedom of speech, freedom of con- science, and the prudence never to practice either.— Mark Twain. I couldn't believe itl But it was true! I added up the cost of my cigarette habit - over $300 a year. I "kicked the habit." Now I bank my money. Why don't you? Kick The Habit! IT'S A MATTER OF LIFE AND BREATH
