Holocaust Memorial Sculpture
Wins Fair's 'Best of Show' Prize

A copper and brass sculp-
ture as a memorial to the
artist's parents who died in
a concentration camp won
the Best of Show award in
the Michigan State Fair arts
division competition. It is
the highest award in the
amateur division.
The 4x3-foot sculpture "I
Accuse" was created by
Henry Friedman of Raine
Ave., Oak Park. He also won
second prize for his copper
sculpture, "Moses and the
10 Commandments."
Friedman, a tool and die
maker, took 11/2 years to
complete Accuse." In his
spare time, he took small
pieces of scrap found in his
shop and silver-soldered or
brazed them together.
He described the piece as
depicting a trial somewhere
in the universe where a

judge is condemning the
world for atrocities against
the Jews. I none hand, the
main figure holds a concen-
tration camp, and in the
other a grave. Angels com-
prise the remainder of
sculpture.
His "Moses" was created
completely from copper. The
one-foot-high sculpture de-
picts Moses holding the 10
Commandments in one hand,
and in the other a staff made
of copper pipe. In front of
the figure is a burning bush.
Friedman began sculpting
as a hobby four years ago.
He said his Jewish life and
training inspired him. Al-
though he was reluctant to
enter his work in competi-
tion, his children persuaded
him. The pieces will be on
display among other sculp-
tures in the Community Arts
Building until Monday.
