NEW YORK (JTA)—Rabbi
Luhanov, Leningrad's only
rabbi, died Aug. 20 in his
home at the age of 95, ac-
cording to information re-
ceived by his friend, Rabbi
Arthur Schneier of the Park

Rabbi Schneier spoke with

He was the foremost tal-

Despite his advanced age,
Rabbi Schneier continued,
"he carried the burden of
responsibility for the spiritual
destiny of Jews in Leningrad
as their only guide and
mentor."

Ohio Nursing Home
Given Accreditation

CLEVELAND (JTA)—The
Montefiore Home for the
Aged here has been accred-
ited by the Joint Commission
on Accreditation to Hospitals.
Accreditation is base] on a
high quality of long-term
care.
Montefiore officials said
accreditation meant that the
facility had chosen to operate
by standards of a profession-
al and nationally recognized
health agency.

2nd Missile Boat
for Israeli Navy

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
Israeli navy got its second
Israeli-made missile boat
named "Keshet," sister to
"Resheff."
The boat, carrying seven
Gabriel surface - to - surface
missiles, two guns and
machine guns, was construct_
ed at the Israeli Shipyards
Ltd. in Haifa.

Meshumed

"Meshumed" is the term
applied to one who has re-
nounced his faith and accept-
ed another one. The word
comes from a term meaning
"to destroy," in the sense
that his relationship with his
origin has been destroyed.
Some claim that the term
means "one who is ex-com-
municated"—because of his
renunciation of the faith.
Some writers claim that the
term relates to a word mean-
ing "to be baptized" into an ,
other faith. In this sense the
word would have a positive
meaning instead of a nega-
tive one.
