Phillip Stollman, co-chair-
man of the international
board of governors of Bar-
Ilan University, stated that
the annual dinner of Detroit
Friends of Bar-Ilan, to be
held Sept. 20. at Cong. Shaa-
rey Zedek, will be linked with
a national program to honor
the pioneers who played im-
portant roles in the estab-
lishment of the university.
Stollman especially listed
Detroit pioneers, including
the late Irving Schlussel,
Daniel Temchin and Abra-
ham Nusbaum.
Marking the 18th anniver-
sary of Bar-Ilan, the dinner
will feature a review of the
university's history, Stollman
said. He added:
"On Aug. 17, 1955, the first
year of studies at Bar-Ilan
in Ramat Gan, Israel, was
officially opened by Prof.
Pinhas Churgin in the pres-
ence of 6,000 visitors. Then
there were 70 students —
today there are close to
6,000.
"Bar-Ilan was established
as an institution of higher
learning designed to impart
knowledge and to encourage
research in the liberal arts
and sciences. In addition,
Bar-Ilan has set, as one of
its primary goals, the in-
tegration of secular knowl-
edge with the spiritual tra-

JERUSALEM — Russian
immigrant students at the
Hebrew University will be
the beneficiaries of a new
translation project now un-
der way at the university's
school for overseas students
on Mt. Scopus.
Dr. Arthur Cygielman, lec-
turer in Jewish history in the
school, and Dr. Benjamin
Pinkus, lecturer in Russian
studies at Hebrew University,
are translating materials in
Jewish studies for use by
Russian-speaking students.
Working on the project, the
translators discovered that
much high-level source mate-
rial exists in Russian, cover-
ing the history of the Jews
until the 1920s.
Writings by such authors as
Weizmann, Ussishkin a n d
Ben-Zvi have been assem-
bled, either in Russian or-
iginal or translated from
German.
Dr. Cygielman unearthed
Russian translations of the
"Ethics of t h e Fathers,"
"Guide to the Perplexed,"
sections of the Talmud and
many other works.
The translations will be
published soon in two collec-
tions, of three volumes
apiece, entitled "Problems in
Jewish History" and "Israel
in Historical Perspective."

at Bar-Ilan Seminar
Thirty prominent rabbis
from England and France
concluded a study tour of
Israel sponsored by the Jew-
ish Agency with a week-end
seminar at Bar-Han Univer-
sity.
The group was organized
by Rabbi Benjamin Levine,
of the Jewish Agency. He
indicated that the visit to
Bar-Ilan was particularly
valuable in that it enabled
the rabbis to familiarize
themselves with the Univer-
sity at first hand, and to get
a better appreciation of its
nature and student life.
