Labor Party Policy on Occupied
Lands Approaches Dayan Demands

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The
Labor Pa r t y leadership
emerged in near-agreement
from its fifth meeting on the
future policy in the territor-
ies.
Meeting at Premier Golda
Meir's office here, the min-
isters went a long way

Moshe Dayan's demands for
a working program in the
territories.
A final meeting on the sub-
ject is scheduled to adopt

Minister Israel Galili, which
is close to Dayan's ideas.
The meeting focused on
two areas of disagreement
in past sessions—the creation
of the city of Yamit in the
Gaza area and land sales be-
yond the Green Line.
It was agreed to bring Ya-
mit into being in a series of
phases over a number of
years. It was also agreed to
enlarge the proposed urban
center from the original 350
housing units to 900. Dayan
is reported to have suggested
1,000 housing units.
The Labor leaders also
agreed in principle that a
team of experts should look
into Dayan's proposal for set-
ting up a deep sea port on
the northern Sinai coast.
Dayan has compromised on
the timetable, conceding that
the deep sea port could wait
until the later stages of de-
veloping a town that will
serve as a strategic outpost

space between the eventual

Gahal Chiefs
Reject JDL
in Alignment

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
Gahal executive unanimous-
ly rejected a request by
Rabbi Meir Kahane to in-
clude the Jewish Defense
League in the non-Labor
alignment Gahal is attempt-
ing to form for the forthcom-
ing national elections.
According to observers,
Gahal is having enough
trouble putting together an
opposition front to Premier
Golda Meir's Labor align-
ment without becoming in-
volved with the controversial
JDL.
The JDL announced some
time ago that it intended to
seek Knesset seats.
Gahal. meanwhile, has ac-
cused Shmuel Tamir of the
Free Center faction of imped-
ing negotiations for an oppo-
sition alignment.

541-2004

NUMBER 1 IN METROPOLITAN DETROIT
AND CLEAN ACROSS THE NATION

others may sound like it
Nobody cleans like it.

The crucial point in the ne-
gotiations is the ratio of Knes-
set representation among the
non-Labor factions.

Gahal and the State List
have agreed to base this on
the compostition of the pres-
ent Knesset in which Gahal
had 26 seats, the State List,
three, and Free Center, two.
But Tabir is insisting on at
least 4-5 seats for his faction
which he says it merits on
the basis of public opinion
polls.
Close to 2,000,000 Israelis
will have the right to vote in
the Oct. 30 elections for the
eighth Knesset — about 250,-
000 more than the previous
election year in 1969 accord-
ing to Supreme Court Judge,
Haim Cohen, who chairs
the Central Knesset Elections
Committee.
Committee secretary Me-
nahem Terlo said the coun-
try would be divided this
year into 16 electorial dis-
tricts — instead of 14 as in
1969 — because this year Tel
Aviv is carved up into three
voting districts. Some 4,000
polling stations will operate
throughout the country.
The budget for this election
is some IL 7,000,000 (about
$1,750,000) compared to IL
5,500,000 in the last elections.
