Maj. Gen. J. A. Van Zyl,
chaplain-general of South
Africa's defense forces, als'
was host to Rabbi Goren at a
luncheon in Pretoria.
The luncheon was attended
by Defense Minister P. W.
Botha, head of South Africa's
armed forces, an Israeli
charge d'affaires and Jewish
communal leaders.
Rabbi Goren stirred a rec-
ord audience from all over
South Africa with his key-
note address to delegates to
the Federation of Syna-
gogue's Conference here last
weekend.
He said that in attempting
to capture Dr. George Hab-
ash, leader of the Popular
Front for the Liberation of
Palestine, and other terrorist
leaders believed to have been
aboard the Lebanese airliner
intercepted by Israel on Aug.
10, Israel was acting not
only in her own defense but
helping to protect the world
against air terrorism.

I FIRESTONE

916

Editor, The Jewish News:
An article quoting Father
Coughlin and his statement
that he is not anti-Semitic
because the Jews only make
up 1/7 of the Semites in the
world, and his followup state-
ment that we were the most
polarized of people, made me
think of the 1930s,
A courageous editor of a
Jewish paper had the tem-
erity to answer his radio dia-
tribes, and he (Coughlin)
would reply to him the fol-
lowing Sunday by slurring
his name out to Shlomovitz.
It reminded me of a flight
I was on recently to Eilat
from Tel Aviv. I sat next to
a sabra who was conversant
in five or six languages. He
had fought in the wars of
1948, 1956 and 1967. His
comment about anti-Semitism
was pertnient.
"When someone calls you
a dirty Jew, you get mad.
Here in Israel wen someone
calls me a dirty Jew, I go
home and take a bath."
Sincerely,
AARON KARP
