ed at the 1971 European
symposium on the affects of
science on society. The ses-
sions, held in Brussels, were
organized by the European
Committee of the Weizmann
Institute of Rehovot, Israel.
In the symposia in this
volume, which was edited
by Anthony R. Michaelis and
Hugh Harvey, the distin-

dozen countries reviewed
their responsibilities and took
into account the liberties
which are essential to their
callings as absolute necessi-

and the quest for knowledge.

Caesarea's Salute to Israel
`Biggest Party S ince Herod'

The New York Times cor-
respondent in Jerusalem de-
scribed it as the biggest bash
in Caesarea since Herod the
Great took his court there
"for some summer fun."
Terence Smith was relating
the details of a three-day
"Salute to Israel" where
such celebrities as Mr. and
Mrs. William J. Levitt, who
arrived with the Duchess of
Argyll aboard the builder's
234-foot yacht; U.S. Rep. Og-
den R. Reid; and former Am-
bassador and Chief of Pro-
tocol Angier Biddle Duke and
his wife enjoyed three days
of open-air dining and enter-
tainment.
Among the beautiful people
and Hollywood stars were Ar-
lene Dahl, Hugh O'Brian,
Allan King and Susan Stras-
berg; the opera stars Patrice
Munsel and Robert Merrill,
and from her home in the
south of France, Josephine
Baker.
The gathering, attended by
Israeli politicians, industrial-
ists and fledgling film stars,
consisted of two parts: a Sat-
urday dinner around the pool
of the Dan Caesarea Hotel
followed by a moonlight per-
formance by the Royal Bal-
let in the Roman amphithea-
ter, and a Sunday cocktail
reception given by Mayor
Teddy Kollek of Jerusalem
in the Israel Museum, fol-
lowed by another dinner and
entertainment in David's
Tower of the Herodian cit-
adel.
Israeli gossip columnist
Mira Avrech recruited Earl
Blackwell and Clive David to
plan details. Levitt under-
wrote most of the cost.
The expected high point
of the affair was to be the
evening of entertainment in
the Citadel. However, it
turned out to be the low
point, reported Smith. Strong
breezes blew the musicians'
sheet music and dust all
around.
Alan King, master of cere-
monies, said he had never
worked under such condi-
tions : "Surroundings built by
Herod and never swept since
the Crusaders."

"disorganized

After
hodge-podge" of entertain-
ment, said Smith, the eve-
ning was saved by Josephine
Baker "who swept down the
stone steps of the tower in
a black dress shot with silver
and a full cape of white
feathers. She overwhelmed
the audience with a version
of 'My Bill' and finished it
off with her signature song,
`La Vie en Rose'." The eve-
ning was to be filmed for an
American Broadcasting Co.
special for the fall.
Many of the guests later at-
tended a party in a Jerusa-
lem nightclub given by Yaffa
Yarkoni, a top Israeli singer.
Although the party ended
Tuesday, many of the guests
stayed on until Thursday,
when they were treated to a
luncheon aboard the Levitt
yacht.
