Dr. Goldstein is not only
the able analyst of world
Jewish affairs and the ef-
fective Jewish representa-
tive of major causes. He is
the linguist who has ably
interpreted Jewish occur-

contains translations of many
speeches he had delivered
in Hebrew and there are
three notable ones that had
been given in Yiddish.

already enthused the author's

Jewish tradition required
that one wash one's hands
upon getting up every morn-
ing.
According to Rabbi Solo-
mon Ben Aderet (Rashea)
the reason for this is the
fact that upon being able to
arise from one's slumber
every morning one should
offer thanks to the Almighty
for being able to get up. The
expression of thanks is an
exercise in liturgy which
relates man directly to God.
He is, therefore, comparable
to the priests (Kohanim) in
the sanctuary of old who
performed . a service which
brought them into contact
with God. Coming into con-
tact with the Almighty re-
quires a person to purify
himself and sanctify himself
like the priests of old who
are described in the Bible as
being required to wash their
hands and feet before enter-
ing the sanctuary (Exodus
30).
in
speaking,
Generally
such circumstances, the
washing is performed on
those parts of the body which
are usually exposed in the
course of the service. Since
the priests of old had to re-
move their shoes before en-
tering the sanctuary, both
the hands and feet were ex-
posed. Since our feet are
usually covered, we wash only
the hands. Also, when a per-
son rises from one plateau
of sanctification to the higher
plateau he is required to
wash his hands out of rever-
ence, in recognition of the
fact that he is entering a
higher level of holiness.
Passing from slumber to the
state of being awake is like
passing from one level to a
higher level of holiness, thus
one is required to wash their
hands.

pears to be no different than
an animal. Indeed, he ap-
pears to place his bodily
needs ahead of the needs of
his soul. The rabbis inter-
pret a verse in the Bible
which says "Thou Shalt Not
Eat On Blood" to mean that
one is not supposed to eat
before he has settled him-
self spiritually to prayer and
dedication to God.
Eating tends to make a
man feel somewhat inde-
pendent, while yet refrain-
ing from food he shows his
dependence on the Almighty
and His power for strength.
The blood tends to empha-
size something of the spirit
since it is in a sense the cir-
culation of nobility through-
out the body. Food enriches
the blood physically. Prayer,
bringing peace of mind and
security, enriches the blood
spiritually. One is, therefore,
obligated to pray first in or-
der to serve his spiritual
needs before he tends to his
physical needs.

Bert Goldstein was always
at her husband's side as a
co-worker and participant in
many of the events at which
he was honored or at which
he together with her were

was their 50th wedding anni-
versary, and this volume
contains their "Thanksgiving
Prayer" they had given
jointly.
Dr. Goldstein had given
the opening prayer in the
U. S. House of Representa-
