The two terrorists were
scheduled to be brought be-

with voluntary homicide, as-
sault and a breach of public
order. According to the
Greek criminal code, they
risk capital punishment if
found guilty.
A Greek police spokesman
said that the two men had
thoroughly prepared their at-
tack. The two had previously
visited Athens Airport to
study the layout.
On the day of the attack,
they arrived by plane — one
from Lebanon and the other
from Libya. They were
given the weapons by "an
unknown man" in the men's
room of the transit lounge.
"Our orders were to attack
Israel-bound passengers of
any nationality and any air-
line," the two Arabs told
interrogators, according to a
police spokesman. They said
the orders came from Black
September.
The two men said that
they planned to attack the
passengers of an El Al plane
due to take off for Tel Aviv.
They apparently made a
mistake, however, attacking
instead the passengers of a
TWA plane bound for New
York-%
The Greek police spokes-
man said that there was no
El Al plane at Athens Air-
port at the time of the at-
tack.
(A Radio Europe number
one correspondent said in
Paris Tuesday that the
Greek police were looking
for "the third man" believed
to be the person who had
handed over the weapons to
the two assailants.)
The two men surrendered
after crouching with 35 hos-
tages behind the lounge's
marble bar for two hours
while they tried to get a
plane to take them to the
Middle East.
Four hours after the at-
tack police disarmed a ti-
bomb, which had not b.
set to go off, found inside a
letter box in the transit
lounge.
Witnesses said passengers
were prepared to board TWA
flights to Tel Aviv and New
York when one of the Arabs,
about to have his baggage
checked for the New York
flight, threw his hand gre-
nade to the ground. Both
men began firing pistols. Or-
iginally reports said both
TWA planes were bound for
Tel Aviv.
First reports of the inci-
dent in Israel resulted in
placing Lod Airport under a
state of emergency. It was
feared that the Athens at-
tack might have been a
diversion for another attack
elsewhere or that the Arabs
were planning to hijack a
plane bound for Tel Aviv.
The emergency at Lod was
relaxed after passengers ar-
rived from Athens. One of
them, Dr. Gerald Stern, a
