Their statements seemed exagger- ated, but it soon turned out that missionaries, with the help of Israeli agents, have started vast activities, espe- cially among new immi- grants, who at first find life hard on their arrival here. The missionaries are espe- cially active among families who have problems regard- ing religious conversion. It is assumed that there from Germany, which organ- izes youth trips from Ger- many to Israel, wear the sign of the Star of David, with the inscription "Jesus" on it. They come to worship at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and at the Wailing Wall. In every town in Israel there are clubs run by mis- sionaries. Some are frequent- ed by Jews and Arabs. In Tel Aviv, the most active missionary group is "Jehov- ah's Witnesses," who have succeeded in converting many Jews. There are clubs in Jerusalem, Haifa, Jaffa, Bat-Yam, Beersheba, Ramat Gan, Afula and even in Mitz- pe Ramon. Their activities are usually conducted in pri- vate apartments. It is assumed that the mis- sionaries succeed in convert- ing 50 Jews each year. These are usually problem cases, 111U? ;17 1260 11 11 2Cti vrto H LINCOLN CENTER • OAK PARK We honor Master Charge and BankAmerica& are hundreds of missionaries active in Israel. There are also personal tragedies in missionary work. A family from Miami Beach had sent their two daughters and a son to Israel. The son joined the army and in Eilat, missionaries persuaded him to become a convert. He was sent to Greece. Although his parents came to Israel as im- migrants, in order to regain their son, he refused to re- turn to Jewry and to Israel. The missionaries also suc- ceeded in "catching" the son of a family from North Afri- ca. He is now living with missionaries in Jerusalem and refuses to return to his suffering parents. At Carmiel (near Acre), missionaries worked among new immigrants from the So- viet Union, who have many absorption problems. They gave the immigrants money in order to repay the Jewish Agency, and to enable them to fly to Canada and other countries. Recently, a missionary en- tered a Sephardi Synagogue near Lod during a service and appealed to the commu- nity to pray for Jesus. The synagogue gabai called the police who threw him out. The leader of a Lutheran sect in Stuttgart, a Mrs. Erna Berger, bought 350 dunams of ground in Israel at Zich- ron Yaacov, Pardes Hanna, Benyamina and Tira. She had paid IL 2,500,000 ($625,- 000) for this land. Until now, the population of Israel has shown indifference to missionary activities. Most people thought that such an activity is legal in a demo- cratic country. But lately public opinion has begun to change. Many think that le- gal steps should be taken against missionaries, to pre- vent their pressures on new immigrants and making use of social problems for their own means. The Chief Rabbinate has recently dealt with the ques- tion of missionary activities in Israel. Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren demanded that the government take steps to re- strain this activity by law. He disclosed that he had dis- cussions with Christian bish- ops, asking them not to make use of social and economic problems of new immigrants. The Chief Rabbinate is try- ing to solve the problems of "mixed" couples and to make conversion procedures easier. Special teachers will be sent to immigrant centers to teach their inhabitants, who wish to convert to Juda- ism, Jewish laws, etc. Chief Rabbi Goren also re- vealed that lately hundreds of "mixed" couples have come to Israel and have not turned to the rabbinate for conversion. Any steps taken to facili- tate conversion procedures will certainly encourage such couples to hasten their con- versions and not to delay un- til difficulties arise later on.
