World Union Plans for 10th Games in '77

It is doubtful any Ameri-
can team participating in in-
ternational competition ever
set a record to compare with
the one compiled by Coach
Eugene Weiss' wrestlers in
Greco-Roman grappling, fa-
vored by most Europeans.
The U.S. won seven gold
medals and two silvers. In
straight wrestling it was nine
golds and one silver, an
amazing display by a tough,
well-trained squad.

age, he noted, is that many
graduate social workers shy
away from field work be-
cause of the low pay in
the profession, unsatisfactory
working conditions in wel-
fare offices and lack of un-
derstanding by local auth-
orities.

Hermine Ryan Now
in Germany for Trial

BONN — Hermine Braun-
steiner Ryan, a New York
City housewife who has been
charged with committing
war crimes as a Nazi prison
guard, arrived in West Ger-
many Tuesday to face trial.
She was extradited by the
United States, it having been
found that she entered the
U.S. in 1963 without admit-
ting the full extent of her
past.

man E. Talmadge of Georgia
in an address reprinted in
the Congressional Record,
quoted the Georgia maga-
zine, Dixie Business, which
named Israel Premier Golda
Meir to its 1973 list of the
world's 10 greatest living
women.
"Hubert F. Lee, editor of
Dixie Business since 1929,
said that history will record
Mrs. Meir as one of the all-
time great leaders — men
or women," Sen. Talmadge
read.
Mrs. Meir received an il-
luminated scroll as a me-
mento from Dr. James P.
Wesberry, pastor of At-
lanta's Morningside Baptist
Church, who was named the
27th "Man of the South" by
Dixie Business.
In its article on Golda, the
magazine finds an ally for
her as it quotes from the
Bible (46th Chapter of
Genesis), "And God spake
unto Israel, in the visions of
the night, and said . . . Fear
not L-.)\ go down into Egypt;
for I will there make of thee
a great nation. I will go
down with thee into Egypt
and I will also surely bring
thee up again."
A second quotation tells
how Mrs. Meir "in 1948
helped fulfill the prophecy
of Isaiah: 'And the nations
of the world shall bring all
your brethren out of all the
nations . . . to my holy
mountain Jerusalem, said
the Lord.' "

most comment, of course,
was Aaron Grandinson, the
black basketball player from
Yeshiva of Queens. A fine
little ball player Aaron sur-
prised the Israelis with his
_fluent Hebrew and his frum-
keit.

to Assist Poor

TEL AVIV—The 9th Mac-
cabiah Games flame was
hardly extinguished w h en
plans were under way for the
10th Maccabiah slated four
years hence. The World Mac-
cabiah Union wants to keep
the momentum going. This
year it was a natural, Israel's
25th anniversary. For the
10th set of games a little
more creativity will be re-
quired.
As usual, the Israeli press
is critical about the conduct
of the 1973 games. Some writ-
ers try to equate the inferior
performances in some sports
events with the overall con-
duct of the games. This is un-
fair. Trie, some of the per-
formances on the field and
in the swimming pool suf-
fered terribly in comparison
to world and Olympic per-
formances. But let's not for-
get the Maccabiah is for Jew-
ish athletes only and when
you can muster but five Ye-
hudim from Spain they are
not going to set any world
records.
The fact remains some of
Mark Spitz's records were
wiped out by a Swedish wom-
an swimmer who won seven
gold medals, better by far
than Spitz did here in his two
appearances.
Wendy Paskin, an Ameri-
can swimmer, walked away
with a total of nine medals,
a new high for the Mac-
cabiah.
In a complement of 200
American athletes one is
bound to find some unusual
characters.
