Another Warning on Effects of Jetvison's Film VC Superstar'
By ROBERT E. SEGAL
(A Seven Arts Feature)
NEW YORK —Judging
from a report of conclusions
reached by Jewish organiza-
tions in America after much
soul-searching on "Key 73,"
"Jews for Jesus," and re-
lated programs calculated to
lure Jews into Christianity,
the guard is up and prosely-
tizers won't have easy pick-
ings.
But
two
developments
noted at the recent yearly
meeting of the National Jew-
ish Community Relations Ad-
visory Council deserve care-
ful attention.
In one instance, a warning
was sounded concerning the
movie, "Jesus Christ Super-
star," produced by Norman
Jewison for Universal Pic-
tures. The second matter
centered on a penetrating
paper, "Christian Evangel-
ism and the Jews," presented
by Dr. David R. Hunter, dep-
uty secretary of the National
Council of Churches of Christ
in the U.S.A.
"Jesus Christ Superstar"
is picking up where the rock
opera by the same title began
in New York in 1971.
Kids going for the rock
pattern will be told through
the movie that Jews as a
people were collectively
guilty for the death of Jesus.
Pilate has scarcely a sugges-
tion of guilt on his hands.
Judas, who comes through as
a black man corrupted by
ominous and powerful Jewish
forces, reinforces sterotypic
impression that have haunted
gullible audiences through
the ages.
Black-Jewish relationships
are certain to be harmed by
the movie, the modern ecu-
menical movement will be
impaired, and long years of
effort to built mutual respect
will be set back.
Dr. Hunter's paper stressed
the importance of acceptance
by all Christian theologians
of continuity, viability, and
vigor of the Jewish living
convenant. He placed second
in importance as a guideline
for honorable procedures for
Christians evangelism "the
good news that Christians
have in Christ."
His third and final points
need added underlining: the
nic First Amendment must
be held inviolate must be re-
spected; and the rich diver-

Assisted in Bar-Ilan Program
RAMAT GAN—The desper-
ate plea of a pregnant moth-
er for aid in obtaining main-
tenance for her 5-year-old
daughter has been answered
by Bar-Ilan University law
students.
The father gave the moth-
er a divorce, and she subse-
quently married a divorced
father of three children. He
has declined to support the
little girl because "he hasn't
enough for his own children."
The students who run a
legal aid bureau at Ramle
decided to help the mother
ask the court for a mainten-
ance order for the girl
against the first husband,
even though she renounced
alimony for herself and
daughter. The grounds are
that the child was not a party
to the renunciation.
This is but one of the many
cases that have come before
the bureau, established in
January by the Yaacov Her-
zog Law School at Bar-Ilan,
in co-operation with the min-
istry of justice and the city
of Ramle.
The bureau, which has its
office at the Ramle Welfare
Department, is manned by 10
third-year students under the
supervision of a U.S. lawyer,
Hal Lieberman, who is re-
qualifying to practice in Is-
rael, and an Israeli lawyer,
Yaacov Neugeborn, who
makes the necessary court
appearances.
The law school decided to
start its legal aid program
at Ramle because the city
authorities were very recep-
tive to the idea. It is close to
the university, and there are
many immigrants in need of
help who cannot afford it.
Only civil cases referred
by the welfare authorities
are accepted. Till now the
number has been restricted
to the most deserving.
Clients are received on
Tuesday afternoons, and stu-
dents do the interviewing
and determining of legal
problems. Then, under super-
vision, they fill in the neces-
sary forms and documents
and help in negotiations. In
certain cases, such as relig-
ious courts, students may
appear before the judges;
otherwise the matter is han-
dled by the office attorney.
Among the cases are those
dealing with divorce, debt
and protection of tenants.
The Jubilee Tour departs September 8, 1973, returns October 7
The Anniversary Tour departs September 22, 1973, and returns
October 19, 1973.

Austrian Politician
Leaves Party Post
After Bias Remark
VIENNA (JTA) — Liberal
Austrian politician Hans Kle-
ment, who said he would
refuse to work with Austria's
Chancellor Bruno Kreisky
because of his Jewish origin,
resigned July 24 in a letter
to the executive board of the
liberal's Viennese section.
Their former vice chair-
man said he resigned "spon-
taneously and voluntarily"
from all his party functions..
Party leaders accepted the
resignation.
In his letter, Klement
called his statement a "re-
grettable mistake." Political
observers said he would
probably be expelled from
the party.
