lighted in asking him about
his travels."
The only other reference
to Jews is in this amazingly
puzzling paragraph:
"Grigori Rasputin . . .
knew little about politics.
Certain things seemed wrong.
to him, such as the persecu-
tion of the inorodtsy, the
aliens, and especially the
pogroms that brought misery
and death to thousands of
Jews merely because they
were Jews; and there was
also the flogging of the peas-
ants—they had their rights,
too, and so did the workers
in the factories and on the
railways. All that seemed
terribly wrong to him — a
cruel, unfeeling mockery of
the word of God. He felt that
the bishops and the archi-
mandrites, concerned about
the Union of the True Rus-
sians, should give some
thought to the creatures of
God who were being victim-
ized."
This is not the general
view of the devil incarnate.
Nevertheless, the story as
related by Minney provides
additional material regard-
ing the historic events. Re-
lated are the love affairs,
the intrigues, the Czar-Czar-
ina relationships, Nicholas
II's love affair and his
mistress, as well as the re-
volutionary activities.
The early Bolshevik and
Menshevik conflicts prior to
the Communist October Re-
volution, the demonstrations,
the emergence of crises—all
these add invaluably to an
understanding of the Russian
events. Such a need for add-
ed knowledge makes Min-
ney's "Rasputin" valuable.

Shub's heroine is the wife of
a correspondent who is
denied continued stay in Rus-
sia when charged with meet-
ing with dissidents. Vannie's
husband who has gone to
Rome is denied readmission
to Russia, and Vannie is giv-
en momentary notice to leave.
Vannie's contacts are lim-
ited. The chauffeur and the
maid are the "official" Rus-
sians she has contact with.
She is bored with her life
and with her husband's in-
dulgence she begins to in-
volve herself in Moscow's
"unofficial" life. She collects
paintings of Russia's unrec-
ognized abstract artists; she
seeks out contacts with the
Russian people and collects
their names and numbers
in an appropriately red,
leather appointments book
she christens "My Russian
Life." And, most reckless of
all, she strikes up friendships
with Moscow's underground
—the dissident intellectuals

her friends is involved, that
this story of plots and in-
trigues will make a most
exciting film.
The payoff insofar as the
American involvement is con-
cerned is at the end. Van-
nie goes to the State De-
partment with her account
of the terror. The American
official is courteous. He
smiles as she narrates. He
comments on what's "in our
interest," he shakes off some
of her details as "irrelevant."
She is compelled to say:

Zionist Answer
to Anti-Zionism

Zionism is the most con-
sistent retort to anti-Semit-
ism. Zionism accepts anti-
Semitism as a fact, and en-
deavors to make the fate of
the Jews independent of the
consent of the non-Jews. It
calls upon the Jews to take
their destiny into their own
hands, and to shape it by
means of the historical deed
instead of preaching morals,

reason and humanity to non-

Jews. Zionism expresses it-
self by watering deserts,
draining marshes, founding
a Jewish State, becoming a
power; by securing to all
those Jews who will not bow
to oppression, humiliation
and persecution the alterna-
tive of a homeland and a
soil. — Count Henry Couden-
hove-Kalergi, in "Anti- Semi-
tism Throughout the Ages."
