The Jewish Welfare Fed-
eration and United Hebrew
Schools have been ordered
to appear in Wayne County
Circuit Court Aug. 24 to show
cause why they should not
reopen the Borman branch
of UHS this fall.
Judge Theodore Bohn will
hear the civil action suit,
which was brought by 10
parents of Borman students.
Federation was named as
co-defendant because more
than $600,000 of the total
UHS budget is allocated by
Federation.
The court issued a re-
straining order against UHS
and Federation in which the
two are "restrained from

IN THE PRIMARY ELECTION, TUESDAY, AUG.

"Bene Israel" is a term
given to a group of Jews in
India who claim that their
•ancestors came to India some
2,000 years ago. Their status
as Jews came into question
when they emigrated en
masse to Israel. Although
they had preserved many
Jewish customs, doubts arose
as to whether they had con-
tinually followed the proper
procedures in marriage, di-
vorce and conversion. After
many discussions the Chief
Rabbinate resolved the issue
in Israel and these Jews are
now allowed to freely inter-
marry with Western Jews in
accordance with certain pre-
liminary procedures.

The 7 1/2-page brief, which
lists 24 points, was signed
by Ralph Levy, Irving Pen-
telnik, Seymour Handelman,
Otto Grubner, Lee Munch-
nik, Sam Tron, Diane Fink,
Margaret Berman, Jerry
Staller and Morton Margolis.
The 10 are representing all
the Borman families, but a
large number would have
been unwieldy for legal pur-
poses, said Levy.
A member of the Hebrew
School Parents Advisory
Committee, attorney Sher-
win Tukel, is representing
the plaintiffs.
The co-defendants were
given 20 days, from July 25,
to respond.
A special meeting of the
UHS board of directors, re-
quested by a number of its
members, had been called to
discuss the Borman issue
Aug. 13. However, they
agreed later that such a
meeting would be futile prior
to the court date and asked
that the special meeting be
postponed until after the
hearing.
Levy said the suit was
filed only after all other op-
tions failed. "We were biting
our lip all the time they kept
saying 'No decision has been
made' (on the closing of
Borman). At no time were
the plaintiffs allowed to
make a presentation to the

UHS board or to Federa-
tion."
He asked those who sup-
port the parents' effort to
make a financial commit-
ment by contributing $2 to-
ward court costs and law-
yers' fees. Checks should be

'Zionism Must Become
Revolutionary Force'

"At the present time of
world revolution, Zionism
must again arise to its form-
er revolutionary impetus.
Zionism must become a rev-
olutionary movement. It
should take an example from
the young Jew of Eretz Yis-
rael who is building a better
world which will be—or so
he hopes — an exemplary
world. By doing so, our youth
is solving both its personal
problem as well as the Jew-
ish national problem. Some-
thing of this spirit must be-
gin to influence that Zionism
which is outside Eretz Yisrael
too. — Dr. Nahum Goldmann.
