request of the Greek deputy
prime minister, Stylianos
Pattakos, a meeting was

The Jewish leaders de-
scribed recent anti-Semitic
manifestations in the coun-
try, culminating in the
smearing of swastikas on the
walls of the Central Syna-

JERUSALEM—Fewer tour-
ists than had been expected
visited Israel during the first
half of this 25th anniversary
year, the Israel Ministry of
Tourism reported.
The ministry had predicted
800,000 tourists for this year.
The total is expected to fall
below 700,000.
The chairman of the Is-
rael Hotel Owners Associa-
tion, Dr. Kurt Licht, sees this
year as an anti-climax to the
1971 record-breaking period.
In view of the current de-
cline and the rapid pace of
new hotel construction, he
advocated the end of the
ban on charter flights. He
pointed out that the high
price of tickets to Israel con-
stitutes a deterrent factor.

In addition, Dr. Licht said,
Israel is an unkempt country
which is still lacking in tour-
ist consciousness.
The general secretary of
the Association of Tourist
Agencies in Israel, Pinhas
Molad said that Israel was
now footing the bill for 1971
—when hotels had indulged
in gross over-booking and the
service was poor and pro-
vided with a take-it-or-leave-
it attitude.
