The remuneration offered was not commensurate with the judges' social position and did not enable them to maintain their families in ac- cordance with this position, the committee declared. The situation was the re- sult of "exploitation" of the fact that judges, unlike other professional groups, were unwilling to strike or resort to other measures. By LIONEL PYETAN "TEL AVIV—A number of immigrant scientists from the Soviet Union already are em- ployed at Tel Aviv Univer- sity, and a number of others who have as yet been unable to get permission to emigrate have been offered posts at the university. Among those already here are physicists, mathematicians, engi- neers and musicologists. An acute problem, how- ever, concerns those who have been refused permis- sion to leave and who have been dismissed from their posts, cut off from all scien- tific contacts and activities and even refused access to Classifieds Get Quick Results scientific libraries. In the course of routine telephone contacts between For Custom Drapery university scientists and members of this group, the Cleaning, Call latter showed an uncontroll- able compulsion to talk sci- ence—to tell their Israel col- leagues about scientific ideas for which they c o u l d no longer find an outlet in the DRAPERY CLEANERS USSR. This brought home to the Israelis that their Soviet colleagues needed intellectual "All That The 'Name Implies" activity in their own field no less than they needed food We Also and drink. Parallel research with a continuing interchange of in- formation is another activity —for example, with Dr. Alex- ander Voronel, an expert on problems of ultra-low tern- peratures. Ordinary mail has proved unreliable. Telephone contact has many drawbacks, apart from expense, but when success- fully established it avoids both delay and uncertainty. A lecture prepared in English in Moscow, and transmitted by telephone, can be taped on receipt and is immediately usable. Similarly telephone contact on parallel research can bring immediate clarity. The project received a temporary setback when the two Soviet scientists joined a hunger-strike in Moscow. The strike had lasted 14 days and would have continued until the strikers received their emigration permits, but for pressure from all over the world, most from their Israel colleagues. Prof. Yuval Ne'- eman, president of Tel Aviv University and chairman of the Israel Academic Commit- tee for Soviet Jewry, empha- sized that they had already achieved all they could hope to achieve through the strike, and added that it was hoped "to welcome you soon in Israel sound in body - and mind, and ready to make your contribution to knowl- Libyan Democracy Qaddafi Style LONDON — The Daily Mirror quoted this aphorism published in "The Little Green Book" of Col. Muam- mar al-Qaddafi's sayings, and currently distributed in Libya: "There are people who talk about freedom of ex- pression, liberty and democ- racy and even about free- dom in the universities. Only sick people can think such things." The strike was stopped and the telephone scientific con- tact resumed. The senior Jewish scientist in the Soviet hierarchy re- questing permission to leave the USSR for Israel is Prof. Benjamin Le vich, distin- guished elec tr oc he mis t, whose son Yevgeny, an astro- physicist, was forcibly ab- ducted and transferred to a labor camp in the Arctic Circle. Prof. Levich accepted a post as head of a department of electrochemistry at Tel Aviv, which will be set up as soon as he can reach Israel. Another scientist who has accepted a post at the uni- versity, is physicist Dr. Alex- ander Tiemkin, who not only applied for permission to emigrate but also renounced his Soviet citizenship.
