Archie Bunker TV Program
Condemned by N.Y. Rabbi

By BEN GALLOB

(Copyright 1973 JTA, Inc.)

A New York rabbi, evalu-
.ating the arguments of
friends and foes of tele-
vision's first portrayal of an
unabashed bigot in the wide-
ly viewed "All in the Fam-
ily" program, has asserted
that its admirers are totally
in the wrong.
Rabbi Jerome K. David-
son, of Temple Beth-El of
Great Neck, N.Y., described
Archie Bunker, as projected
on CBS program, now on
summer re-runs, as "a bigot,
anti-black, anti-Semitic, anti-
Puerto Rican and anti-hu-
manity." To Archie Bunker,

W h a t Rabbi Davidson
called "the most perceptive
favorable comment" he had
heard about Archie Bunker
came, he said, from Carroll
O'Connor, w h o portrays
Archie. He quoted O'Connor
as declaring that "Archie's
dilemma is coping with a
world that is changing in
front of him. He doesn't
know what to do except lose
his temper, mouth his
poisons, look elsewhere to fix
the blame for his own dis-
comfort." O'Connor conclud-
ed that Archie would never
get to the root of his prob-
lem "because the root of his
problem is himself and he
doesn't know it."
Rabbi Davidson declared
that what distressed him par-
ticularly was that "those who
delight in presenting so
honest a view of life cannot
be equally honest and per-
ceptive about the effect of
their work." He said that the
program's producers, direct-
ors, authors and actors had
several premises in defense
of the program with which
he profoundly disagreed.
In defense of the program,
Arnold Hano wrote in the
New York Times magazine
that "fifty million Americans
are being told week after
week it does you no good to
be a bigot. You end up where
you began . . . clinging to a
world that no longer exists."
Rabbi Davidson retorted,
"Dear Mr. Hano, bigots do
win. You, who are a self-
identified Jew, have a very
bad memory. And when they
do win, they are not lovable
and it is not funny."

Bonn Ups Pensions
for War Survivors

BONN (JTA) — The West
German government is in-
creasing pensions for resti-
tution recipients and war
victims, it was learned here.
An official announcement
of a 9.5 per cent increase in
restitution pensions is ex-
pected within the next few
months.
Despite objections from the
Bundesrat, the upper house
of the federal parliament,
the increases will be retro-
active to Jan. 1, 1973. They
will affect about 175,000 Is-
raelis.
The government also en-
visages an 11.4 per cent in•
crease in war victims' pen-
sions, which was approved
by the Bundesrat July 6 and
is expected to go into effect
Jan. 1, 1974.
The opposition Christian
Democratic Union (CDU)
and Christian Socialist Union
(CSU), along with war vic-
tims groups, tried to per-
suade the government to im-
plement the increase from
July 1, 1973. But the January
1974 date still stands.
