`Twin Authors'
Share Posts
at Hebrew U.

JERUSALEM — Drs. Shlo-
mo Slonim and Michla Pom-
erance (her maiden — and
professional — name), lec-
turers at the Hebrew Univer-
sity are "twin authors" who
this year have had their re-
spective studies in the field
of international law and di-
plomacy published by the
Johns Hopkins University
Press, Baltimore.
The association of the aca-
demic careers of husband and
wife began at Columbia Uni-
versity, where both earned
their PhDs under the guid-
ance of the same professors.

Before coming to Columbia,
Australian-born Dr. Slonim
received an LLB from the
University of Melbourne,
which he attended under a
Commonwealth Scholarship.
Dr. Pomerance, who was
born in Poland and raised in
the U.S., graduated summa
cum laude from Brooklyn
College, where she was elect-
ed to Phi Beta Kappa. She
entered Columbia on a Wood-
row Wilson fellowship.
Dr. Slonim's work, "South
West Africa and the United
Nations: An International
Mandate in Dispute," the le-
gal and political history of
the South West Africa dis-
pute from its origins in the
1919 mandates compromise
through each stage of inter-
action between the United
Nations and the World Court.
Dr. Pomerance's "The Ad-
visory Function of the Inter-
national Court in the League
and UN Eras," is a compre-
hensive analysis of the ad-
visory opinions handed down
by the World Court in its 50-
year history.
After a brief period of
teaching at City University
of New York and Yeshiva
University, Drs. Slonim and
Pomerance came to Israel on
aliyah (immigration to Is-
rael) in 1967-68 to take up

appointments at the Hebrew
University. They settled in
Jerusalem, where they now
live together with their young
sabra (Israel-born) daugh-
ter, Avigali.
