JERUSALEM — With the
close of the academic year,
members of the Archeology
Institute of the Hebrew Uni-
versity have scattered all
over Israel for an active sea-
son of digging.
Most of the excavations
will be carried out in cooper-
ation with the Israel Explora-
tion Society and the Govern-
ment Department of Antiqui-
ties and museums, and will
accept volunteer manpower.
The digs are:
Excavations near the walls
of the Temple Mount, con-
ducted by Prof. Benjamin
Mazar and Meir Ben-Dov, go
into the summer season with
hundreds of volunteers from
Israel and abroad. The work
has concentrated on areas to
the west and the south. At
the end of this summer an
exhibition of important finds
will open in David's Citadel
in Jerusalem. The dig is en-
tering its sixth consecutive
year, and accepts volunteers
the year round.
Excavations in the Jewish
Quarter of the Old City, tin-
der the direction of Prof.
Nahman Avigad, continue in
areas slated for construction
of new buildings.
At Tel Qasila in Ramat
Aviv, excavations were re-
sumed last year under the
direction of Amihai Mazar,
with the participation of ar-
cheology students and over-
seas volunteers. The 1972 ex-
cavation revealed a unique
