Kosher 'Meals-on-Wheels' Set
for Homebound byJFCS,NCJW

A kosher meals-on-wheels
program for Jewish home-
bound is scheduled to begin
by the end of July, announced
by Mrs. Isadore Winkelman,
president of the Greater De-
troit Section, National Coun-
cil of Jewish Women, and
Mrs. Joseph Jackier, presi-
dent, Jewish Family and
Children's Service.
The project will be jointly
sponsored by JFCS and
NCJW, with financial under-
writing of costs, providing
of volunteer and daily ad-
ministration of the service
by NCJW.
JFCS will provide case-
work and supervisory time
for the coordination of this
project.
The board of JFCS and the
board of NCJW unanimously
approved participation in the
kosher meals-on-wheels pro-
gram.

temperature retaining con-
tainers by volunteers and de-
livered weekdays by drivers
and volunteers to 25-30 home-
bound Jews.

and kitchen space for prepar-
ation of the meals.
Volunteers are recruited
from NCJW with training
sessions conducted with
JFCS. A volunteer "friendly
visitor" will, at least once
weekly, accompany the driv-
er and spend some extra time
with the subscriber, explain-

Samuel Lerner, executive
director of JFCS, welcomed
the new service. "The role of
the agency," Lerner stated.
"includes identifying a n d
selecting those persons who
can most benefit from the
program. This involves inter-
viewing the applicants, de-
termining their needs, as
well as their readiness to
participate in the program."
A professional caseworker
on the staff of JFCS, Hillary
Gitstein, will be coordinator
of the project. She will pro-
vide continued casework and
followup services as needed
by applicants.
Those who are able to
pay for the full cost of the
service will be expected to
do so. For those who can
only pay part of the costs,
there will be a sliding scale
of charges, based upon abil-
ity to pay
Mrs. Winkelman and Mrs.
Jackier acknowledged Sinai
Hospital's social service de-
partment, the Jewish Home
for the Aged, the senior adult
department of the Jewish
Center, Federation Apart-
ments, the Jewish Vocation-
al Service-Community Work-
shop and the Jewish Welfare
Federation for their interest
in the project. These agen-
cies act as an advisory com-
mittee.

Red Cross Disaster
Fund Boosted by OF

Thanks to the generous
giving of metropolitan De-
troit citizens during annual
Torch Drives, the traditional
Red Cross response to dis-
aster was made possible
again.
Aid to victims of late win-
ter storms, tornadoes and
resultant flooding in Michi-
gan and across the nation,
came in the form of a pledge
from the United Foundation
for $177,471.
