The National Conference
on Soviet Jewry has re-
ceived information that the
Jewish cemetery in Kishinev
was desecrated. There were
acts of hooliganism and van-
dalism spotted by Jews in
the surrounding vicinity.
Specifically, a stone com-
memorating the 1905 purge
against the Jews was de-
faced. Soviet Jews appealed
to authorities to tighten
security. No arrests were
made.

ily. The internationally prom-
inent firearms expert who
was dismissed from his
Leningrad post after apply-
ing for visas to emigrate,
has been offered a job at
the Israel Maritime Museum
in Haifa.
The museum's director,
Aryeh Bel Ali, was at Lod
Airport to greet Tarassuk,
his wife, their two children
and his mother. The Taras-
suk family left the Soviet
Union last Thursday and
spent several days in Vienna
before coming here. Taras-
suk was one of several prom-
inent Soviet Jews seeking
emigration on whose behalf
several U. S. senators inter-
vened with Soviet authori-
ties.
Speaking in the U.S. Sen-
ate July 13, Sen. Henry M.
Jackson said:
"Mr. President, I am ex-
tremely pleased to be able to
report that Dr. Leonid
Tarassuk, the internationally
renowned Soviet museum
authority whose year-long
struggle to gain permission
to emigrate drew worldwide
attention and sympathy, has
arrived in Vienna with his
family.
"It is my hope that the
Soviet government will cor-
rectly assess the determina-
tion of the American people
and the U.S. Congress on the
issue of individual liberty
and that as the days go by
we will be able to welcome
to the free world many, many
more individuals who have
dared demand their funda-
mental human right to emi-
grate.
"Despite his own terrible
ordeal, and at great personal
risk, Dr. Tarassuk courage-
ously lent encouragement and
support to many other So-
viet citizens who are harass-
ed and intimidated by the
Soviet government as a con-

sequence of applying to emi-
grate."

LONDON (JTA) — Jewish
sources in the Soviet Union
reported that Edward Kuz-
netsov has been transferred
from a strict regime labor
camp to a prison. The
sources said that Kuznetsov,
who was sentenced to 15
years at the first Leningrad
hijack trial in December
1970, was transferred be-
cause he has written an auto-
biography and managed to
send the manuscript to a
publisher in a Western coun-
try. In a prison cell, Kuznet-
sov will not be able to write.
