The yeshivot have gone to
great lengths to organize
special classes for the Rus-
sian immigrants, R a b b i
Greenbaum continued. The
Achei Tmimim Yeshiva in
Rishon-le-Zion program had
50 students three years ago;
now it has 135.
In all there are about 500
Russian Jews undergoing in-
tensive religious education in
a number of yeshivot.
Rabbi Greenbaum noted
that these were among the
156 yeshivot which receive
financial subsidies from the
JDC, with funds from the
United Jewish Appeal. Sev-
eral hundred of the Russian
Jews have already been re-
ferred to various JDC/Mal-
ben facilities for care, he
added.
To help overcome langu-
age difficulties, Russian
scholars are translating the
Bible and other Hebrew texts
into modern Russian, Rabbi
Greenbaum said.
