Dr. Max Horkheimer, phi-
losopher and social scientist
who served as rector of the
University of Frankfurt and
in the post-Nazi years was
a consultant for the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee, died
Saturday in Nuremberg, Ger-
many, at the age of 78. He

recently established his resi-
dence in Montagnola, Switz-
erland.
He had become an Ameri-
can citizen after moving the
Frankfurt Institute for Social
Research to this country,
when he sensed the Nazi
danger in 1934, to become an
affiliate, from the 1935 to
1946, of Columbia Univer-
sity.
Born in Stuttgart, he earn-
ed his doctorate from the
University of Frankfurt in
1922, and he held professor-
ships in the social philosophy

there. He returned to its
faculty as guest professor in
1948, and was named dean
of the philosophy faculty in
1950 and rector in 1951.
In 1951, commenting on
the revival of German uni-
versities' humanistic tradi-
tions in the Federal Repub-
lic, Dr. Horkheimer said that
the problem created by neo-
Nazism must not be ignored.
