Nice, in the presence of the
French Minister of Culture
Maurice Druon, former Cul-
ture Minister Andre Malraux,
and Israeli Ambassador Ash-

The museum is the, first

over and for Israel."
The museum, which is
called the "Marc Chagall
Biblical Message," houses
more than 400 drawings,
lithographs, sculptures, oil
paintings, pastels, mosaics,
tapestries, and stained-glass
windows.
Each has a biblical theme.
At the ceremony, Chagall
recalled memories of his
childhood, such as the pro-
found religious faith of his
father and the songs of the
Passover "seder."
The Chief Rabbi of Nice,
Michel Morrali, was also
present.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Mayor Teddy Kollek said
that he was sure all political
parties in Jerusalem would
welcome an Arab list for
the city council elections in
October.
"If such a party is estab-
lished," Kollek said, "its
representatives would help
us find the adequate solution
to help Arabs in this city."
Kollek, who returned from
a 10-day private visit to
Iran, praised Hebron Mayor
Mohammed Ali Al-Jaabari
for his recent statement en-
couraging Jerusalem Arabs
to participate in the elec-
tions.
"This statement shows
once again that Jaabari is a
practical statesman who
comes to solves problems and
not to create them," Kollek
said.
He added that Haabari's
statement would encourage
other responsible Arab lead-
ers in Jerusalem to run for
election in a manner that
would be honorable for East
Jerusalem residents.

Man is ready to die for an
idea, provided that idea is
not quite clear to him.—Paul
Eldridge.

Withdrawal 'Myth'

Editor, The Jewish News:
During a discussion by
American State Department
representatives with Israelis
when Israel was advised to
withdraw one minute, then
told to remain firm, then told
to withdraw . . . then re-
main, etc., etc., etc., one of
the Israelis told the follow
ing story:
Israelis are very anxious
to please Americans, (even
their waiters). One day an
American in an Israeli res-
taurant called the waiter and
told him to increase the air
conditioning because, he said
"It's too hot here." The
waiter hurried away to com-
ply.
A few minutes later he
told the waiter to lower the
air conditioning because
"It's too cold here." The
waiter again said "Okay"
and hurried away to comply.
Ten minutes later the
same man said, "better
raise the air conditioning
again because it's getting
too hot now." And again the
waiter obligingly said
"Okay," as he hurried away.
This continued back and
forth, and another patron's
patience was exhausted and
embarrased by the Ameri-
can's actions. So he called
the waiter over and told him
not to permit the American
to keep having him lower
the air conditioning one min-
ute . . . only to order him
raise it the next.
The waiter with a look of
surprise asked, "Who has
air conditioning?"
So, "who is withdrawing"
from any of the present
areas?
Cordially yours,
SOL DANN

Peres OKs 13 Pct. Hike in Bus Fares

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Transport Minister Shimon
Peres told the Knesset Fri-
day that he favored a 13
per cent fare increase by
the Dan and Egged bus co-
operatives which have asked
for a 26 per cent raise in
fares.
Peres maintained that 13
per cent was sufficient to
compensate the co-ops for
cost increases since last Sep-
tember.
Dan serves the Tel Aviv
area and Egged operates
inter-city bus services.
The two are planning to
merge and are seeking pass-
age of a law that would
give the new combine a legal

monopoly of bus traffic
within Israel's pre-June,
1967 boundaries.
They also expect the gov-
ernment to wipe out their ac-
cumulated indebtedness to
the treasury when the mer-
ger takes place.
