NEW YORK (JTA) — Two
leaders of Orthodox Jewry
have called on the American
Jewish community for "a

"You have won the fight,"
Rabbis Bernstein and Schoen-
feld said in a statement is-
sued after the close of the
Rabbinical Council's annual
convention and addressed to
secular Jewish organiza-
tions.
- "You are now challenged
to produce from within the
Jewish community the neces-
sary resources to assure the
continued existence of these
schools."
The rabbis warned that
"Only positive intensive Jew-
ish education can cope with
the increased incidence of
assimilation and intermar-

riage."
According to the Rabbini-
cal Council leaders there are
some 420 Jewish day schools
in the U.S. with an enroll-
ment of 100,000.
Rut they said, "the inabil-
ity of more and more parents
to meet the increased costs
of tuition have brought the
day school movement to a
critical stage. Unless com-
munal funds are immediately
made available, many of
these schools may pass out
of existence."
To avert this, the rabbis
said that Jewish federations
and welfare funds must give
precedence in their alloca-
tions to the day school move-
ment. (See editorial page 4.)

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Zim
Lines, Israel's national ship-
ping company, registered a
profit of IL 19,300,000 in
1972. But it was a mere 3
per cent of the internation-
al carrier's IL 650,000,000
turnover, managing director
Moshe Kashti reported.
Kashti said that the 1972
profit was 0.9 per 'cent less
than that in 1971 and fore-
cast a further decline for
1973 even though most Zim
services are flourishing. He
said t h e profit squeeze
stemmed mainly from this
year's 40 per cent wage rise
granted officers, seamen and
shore staff and the heavy
losses incurred from harbor
congestion in Israel during
the first half of the year.
Kashti said Zim was pre-
sently embarked on a major
new building program repre-
senting an investment of
$280,000,000. When com-
pleted the Zim fleet will
reach 2,400,000 tons dead-
weight (carrying capacity),
he said. The last of four
Clyde - type dual - purpose
freighters will be delivered
from a British shipyard next
month and four other ships,
including a 250,000 dead-
weight ton tanker will be de-
livered during the next few
months.
Kashti said the company
is already working on fur-
ther expansion plans involv-
ing an investment of between
$200-$300 million that will
add another million tons
deadweight to Israel's mer-
chant marine.
