UN May Postpone Mideast Debate

UNITED NATIONS (JTA)
— The Security Council's
Middle East debate, tenta-
tively scheduled to resume
July 16, may be postponed
until next month, sources
here said.
A UN spokesman said that
Ambassador Gunnar V. Jar-
ring, the secretary general's
special emissary to t h e
Middle East, was due to re-
turn to New York in a few
days, but only if the debate
is resumed.
Secretary General Kurt
Waldheim returned Monday
from the European Security
Conference in Helsinki.
The d e b a t e, originally
called for by Egypt, was ad-
journed June 14 on the eve
of the Nixon-Brezhnev sum-
mit meeting.
Observers here indicated
that it was largely up to
Egypt the initiator, to say
when the debate will be re-
sumed.
Egyptian Foreign Minister,
Mohammed H. el-Zayyat is
visiting Yugoslavia and Aus-
tria this week. He will be in
Vienna from July 12-15. It
was not known when he will
be at the UN. Another ab-
sentee is Ambassador Joseph
Odero Jowi of Kenya, who is
in Geneva. Kenya is a non-
permanent member of the
Security Council.

port.
The report was brought
here when the Greek pas-
senger vessel Eurpheous
docked at Haifa with 300 pil-
grims, most American
Baptists, on a Holy Land
tour. The ship was the first
in years to sail directly from
Egypt to an Israeli port.
The Eurpheous was careful-
ly inspected and placed
under special guard for the
three days that her passen-
gers will be visiting Israel.
