NEW YORK — A fire that
heavily damaged a black
Israelite synagogue in the
Bedford - Stuyvesant section
of Brooklyn was attributed
to arsonists, according to the
chief fire marshal.
He added that the investi-
gation of the fire is continu-
ing.
Firemen said that two
separate fires — one in the
office and recreation room
at the front of the building
and the other at the rear
where services are held—had
both been started with paint
thinner.
The temple, Temple Bnai
Zaken occupies the second
floor of a two story building.
The synagogue's leader,
Rabbi Chief Chaim Israel,
wearing a gray turban, was
directing cleanup operations
Ien he confirmed that the
:.•nagogue had been victim-
ized by arsonists. A pool
t;l ble and juke box in the
recreation room had been
broken open and both their
cash boxes removed.
The rabbi said the fire was
the work of persons who
were "envious and jealous"
