Twenty-three senators, led
by Jacob Javits (D. NY) and
Harrison Williams (D. NJ),
asked Congress to establish a
national program for the
"diagnosis, control and pre-
vention of Tay-Sachs dis-
ease," which attacks children
who are born seemingly
healthy and normal and is
fatal, usually by the time
they reach the age of two.
Addressing the Senate,
Javits said the disease af-
fects one in 30 American citi-
zens of Eastern European
Jewish origin who constitute
90 per cent of the U.S. Jew-

hundred of the general
American population.

Israelis Assailed
by Bedouins on
Disputed Lands

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Be-
douii.s from the Pithat Ra-
fiah region claimed that Is-
raeli , military authorities
were pressuring them to re-
nounce their rights to the
lands from which they were
ousted last year.
The charges was made by
Sheikh Sabbah Abdallah Sa-
Iima, a Bedouin chieftain who
appeared at a press confer-
ence here with two members
of Hashomer-Hatzair kibut-
zim in the Negev.
A section of the Pithat Ra-
fiah area, near the Gaza
Strip, was cordoned off last
year and declared a military
security zone.
Bedouins inbahiting the
land were evacuated from
the zone and offered com•
pensatory settlements.
Salima said that his Be-
douins, who are a nomadic
people, were offered flats
and IL 5,000 ($1,250) com-
pensation but rejected the
offer.
He alleged that as a re-
sult, the Israeli military was
harassing the tribesmen and
obstructing their freedom of
movement.

voluntary Tay-Sachs screen-
ing and counseling programs.
The bill asks for an authori-
zation of $3,000,000 for the
first year of the program.
The federal government has,
to date, spent $1,500,000 for
Tay-Sachs research through
a series of projects and has
invested $3,000,000 in related
research. Over the past two
years, Jewish centers in ma-
jor American cities have been
conducting numerous screen-
ing projects for the testing of
possible carriers of the dis-
ease.
In 1969, "a major break-
through in medical history,"
said Javits, demonstrated
"the absence of a newly dis-
covered enzyme, hezosamini-
dase (Hex-A for short) was
the specific cause of Tay-
Sachs disease."
The discovery of the miss-
ing enzyme made it possible
to identify adults of child-
bearing age as carriers. In-
dividuals having the "carrier
state" are themselves healthy
but if two happen to marry,
one-quarter of their children
run the risk of having Tay-
Sachs disease, according to
Javits.
Describing Tay-Sachs, Jav-
its stated: "The children
gradually a r e debilitated
showing early clinical signs
of the illness at nine months
and losing more functions
controlled by the central
nervous system such as sight,
control of swallowing, etc.
They have frequent convul-
sions and, as a consequence
of their increasingly severe
illness, require_ chronic hos-
pitalization for average pe-
riods of two years before
they die. All these events are
caused by the lacks of the
eniyme whose function is to
help metabolize brain fats.
When the enzyme is missing,
the intermediate unmetabo-
lizable fats accumulate in the
nerve cells and destroy them.
At present, there are no
known means to reverse this
process in the afflicted chil-
dren."

In '67: They Thought
of Kadish for Israel

JERUSALEM ( ZINS ) —
Knesset member Adi Yaffe,
who accompanied Israeli
Premier Levi Eshkol on his
visit with President Johnson
in Washington in 1969, has
revealed a hitherto secret
footnote to the period imme-
diately preceding the 1967
Six-Day War. Yaffe relates
details of a conversation he
had with a high-ranking
White House official who
confided in him, saying, "On
the eve of the outbreak of
the Six-Day War, the White
House considered what
America's stance might be
in the event the Arabs were
victorious.
"After much deliberation,
we concluded that the Unit-
ed States would be unable
to do anything other than
convene America's rabbis
for the purpose of saying
kadish." In this connection,
Yaffe also disclosed that the
Israeli high command had
feared the nation would suf-
fer tens of thousands of cas-
ualties. Even Ben-Gurion is
alleged to have warned
against commencing the bat-
tle, unless there were assur-
ances that Israel could turn
for assistance, if needed, to
some outside world power.

Yigal Allon
Recovering

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Dep-
uty Premier Yigal Allon re-
mained hospitalized Sunday
after apparently suffering a
heart attack last Thursday.
Doctors said his condition
was excellent but that he
needed several more days of
rest. They said he had - suf-
fered some "malfunction" of
the heart muscle.
Allon entered the Tel Hash-
omer Medical Center on
Thursday for an examina-
tion after complaining that
he felt ill. He was visited
Saturday by Premier Golda
Meir and other members of
the Cabinet. He is under the
care of Dr. Henri Neufeld.

French Interview
Axel Springer on
Jews in Germany

NEW YORK — On the 20th
anniversary of the Berlin re-
volt against occupying Soviet
troops, Axel Springer, the
West German publisher, was
interviewed by editors of the
French newsmagazine, L'
Express.
Appearing in the current
issue of the magazine, the
interview gives Springer's
views on improving East-
West relationships, how the
West can deal effectively with
Soviet leader Leonid Brezh-
nev and the need for the
West to keep Berlin alive
and strong.
Springer was asked why
he always links the fates of
Berlin and Jerusalem. In re-
ply, he listed the. contribu-
tions which Jews have made
to German life.
"And then there is the ab-
solute will to make repara-
tions for the crimes which
the German people have
committed against the Jews
— as far as that is possible,"
Springer said. -
"There is a third reason
which I want to declare quite
openly. I try to be a religious
man, to behave like a man
of faith. There is for me the
love of Jewry which arises
from religion . . . The fact
that 16,000,000 Jews have
survived as Jews, despite
the diaspora, thanks to God's
providence, is a great and
significant mystery which is
closely bound up with my
faith."

18 Knesset Members
Have Oriental Origin

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Al-
though their number has in-
creased over those elected
for the first Israel Parlia-
ment, there are still only 18
(out of 120) members of
Knesset who came from Ori-
ental (non-Ashkenazi) ori-
gins, Among the incumbent
18 members of Parliament
are 11 affiliated with the
United Labor Party (approxi-
mately 20 per cent); five
connected with Gahal (again
20 per cent of the total bloc);
one belonging to the national
religious faction and one in-
dependent (previously elect-
ed under the banner of Hao-
lam Hazeh).
Even the orthodox Aguda
has one deputy from the
Sephardi community. Achdut
Ha-avoda faction has two
Oriental deputies (25 per
cent), Rafi has three (more
than 36 per cent), but the
