Money Crisis in Rehovot

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
Weizmann Institute of Sci-
ence in Rehovot faces "grave
financial problems" and has
appealed to its supporters
abroad to increase contribu-
tions and step up fund-rais-
ing efforts.
The appeal was made by
Dr. Zvi Dinstein, deputy min-
ister of finance who is chair-
man of the institute's execu-
tive council.
In his report to the council,
Dr. Dinstein said that "de-
spite severe limitations on ex-
pansion the Weizmann Insti-
tute faces grave financial
problems due to constantly
rising cinls over which it has
little or no control."
The executive council elect-
ed three more prominent

Cultural Gap Begins
in Cradle, Student
Research Shows

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The
cultural gap between haves
and have-nots — one of the
most serious isues confront.
ing Israeli society—may have
its beginnings in the cradle,
according to research by a
Hebrew University graduate
student published here.
A thesis by Susan Ela, who
is seeking an MA in educa-
tion, showed that the re-
sponses of infants as young
as 4 months differed accord-
ing to the socio-economic
class into which they were
born. Miss Ela based her
findings on a study of 80 in-
fants age 4-7 months from
normal middle class homes,
culturally disadvantaged
homes and institutions.
The infants from the
middle-class homes had an
ability to reach for and ma-
nipulate objects which the
other infants lacked, Miss
Ela reported.
Psychologists have been
aware that cultural depriva-
tion begins at an early age.
But they have long believed
that its effects were not
noticeable until at least the'
age of 18 months.

Shloimovitz Assails
Oxford Supplement

LONDON — Marcus Shloi-
movitz, the Manchester tex-
tile merchant who has been
campaigning against "poison-
ous" definitions of the word
"Jew" in dictionaries, said
he was totally dissatisfied
with the decision by the Ox-
ford English Dictionary to
print a supplement to its defi-
nition in 1975.
Despite his protest, the- def-
inition of "Jew" in the Oxford
English Dictionary as "a
grasping or extortionate mon-
ey lender" is to stay, but the
supplement now being pre-
pared will explain how this
description came to be used.
A private hearing in the
high court was adjourned last
October after Clarendon
Press, publishers of the dic-
tionary, submitted that there
was insufficient cause for ac-
tion. The action will be heard
by a high court judge on
Thursday.

Hebron Arabs J ews Placated by Gen. Dayan

JERUSALEM (JTA) — De-
fense Minister Moshe Dayan
walked a thin line between
the demands of Arab resi-
dents of Hebron and those of
Jewish settlers in the new
suburb of Kiryat Arba.
Gen. Dayan visited the
West Bank town and spoke to
its mayor, Sheikh 'Moh'am-
med Ali el-Jaabari.
He also met with the Kir-
yat Arba settlers whom he
told to establish a friendly
relationship with their • Arab
neighbors and to take into
consideration the latters'
legitimate wishes and in-
terests.
Rabbi Moshe Levinger,
leader of the Jewish commu-
nity, said they would wel-
come a visit by Mayor Jaa-
bari. But they accused the
government of discouraging
large-scale Jewish settlement
in the Hebron area and on
the entire West Bank.

They asked Dayan to con-
vince the government to con-
fiscate more Arab lands so
that more 'housing can be
built and more immigrants
settled in Kiryat Arba.
Gen. Dayan was asked by
Mayor Jaabari to take up the
release of detainees, develop-
ment of the town and the
maintenance of Arab auton-
omy on the West Bank.
The defense minister, who
described the Hebron mayor
as "an eminent personality,"
said the Israeli government

wanted to keep Hebron from
being dependent in any way
on the Jewish quarter in Kir-
yat Arba.
