Nederlander Chairs Horse Show; 2 Young Women Participate Horses and riders from 16 states and the Province of Ontario will compete for $23,000 in prizes at the 38th annual Detroit Horse Show— one of the nation's most pres- tigous outdoor equestrian events—which opens for a nine-day run today at the Bloomfield Open Hunt Club here. Show Chairman Harry Ned- erlander says amateur and professional riders have en- tered 650 horses—worth an estimated $7,800,000—in the competition which runs through Sunday, July 1. In addition to cash prizes, na- tional and international tro- phies will be awarded. The two areas of competi- tion, according to Nederlan- der, are dressage and jump- ing. The dressage competi- tion, where a horse moves through a complex series of maneuvers in response to a rider's hands and legs, is scheduled for June 22-24. It will be followed by events featuring hunters and jump- ers June 26 through July 1. Two of the fiercest com- petitors gearing up for the horse show this month are two teen-agers, Leslie Has- tings, 18, and Linda Wasser- man, 17, who will be riding real mounts in the annual event. Linda has been riding since she was 4 years old. Linda, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Wasserman of Bir- mingham, started showing in Michigan when she was eight, and by the time she was 13 was competing nationally. Linda is a Kingswood School Cranbrook graduate and will be heading for Ann Arbor in September to study art history at the University of Michigan. MRS. JOEL GERSHENSON Linda Gail August and Joel D.
