Newsmen's Telephones Bugged, Israel Justice Minister Admits

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Justice Minister Yaacov
Shimshon Shapiro admitted
in the Knesset that the
phones of journalists have
been tapped by Israeli au-
thorities to find out how cer-
tain items of information
appeared in the press were
obtained.

They say there's nothing like a Detroit bagel . . . but
this is going a little far . . . A "bagel airlift" from Detroit
to Frankfurt, Germany, was organized by Rabbi Richard C.
Hertz, senior rabbi of Temple Beth El, upon his return
from a Defense Department mission to confer with Jewish
chaplains stationed in Europe. When Rabbi Hertz asked the
chaplains what the Jewish servicemen wanted from back
home, they replied "Bagels." The sisterhood of Temple
Beth El, with Mrs. Audrey Pearl as chairman of the USO
bagel airlift committee, responded to the call. Twice a
month on a direct Pan Am flight from Detroit to Frankfurt,
dozens of bagels are airlifted so that Ben Sternberg, direc-
tor of the European USO, can receive them the next morn-
ing and have them distributed to USO centers in Europe.

as saying that 13 telephone
taps were made last year
and four were made during
the first five months of this

He didn't say whose

cording to the justice minis-
ter, the defense and police
ministries and the secret
service (Shin Bet) engaged
in wiretapping only with the
authorization of senior of-
ficers or the secret service
chief himself.
It was done, Shapiro said,
only in cases of "State
security or severe criminal
acts," in a few extreme
cases, where grave harm
had been caused to state se-
curity.

He told the Knesset that
he hoped the proper legisla-

was persuaded not to submit
a bill to the Knesset then on

Temple to Abolish
Fee for Education

ALBANY, N.Y. (JTA —
Temple Israel has voted to
eliminate fees for pupils in
its educatio.nal center.
For the first time in the
congregation's 24-year hist-
ory, membership dues of con-
gregants will provide for
free education for all pupils
from kindergarten age
through high school, syna-
gogue officials said.
Dr. Morris Eson, chairman
of the educational center's
board of education said that
the move was an acknowl-
edgement that Jewish educa-
tion was the full responsibili-
ty of every member of the
congregation.

Extremes meet and there
is no better example than
the haughtiness of humility.
—Ralph Waldo Emerson.
