Synagogue Cou ncil of America Maps 3 Studies- , Elects Blank

NEW YORK — The Syna-
gogue Council of America
has launched three major
studies to explore the future
role of the synagogue in
American Jewish life, it was
announced by the SCA's new
president, Rabbi Irwin M.
Blank, at the annual meeting
in New York.
Rabbi Blank, of Temple
Ohabei Shalom in Brookline,
Mass., succeeds Rabbi Irv-
ing Lehrman of Miami
Beach.
The three studies, being
organized by the council's
Washington - based Institute
for Jewish Policy Planning
and Research, will deal with

Jewish community transition,
Jewish marriage patterns
and Jews on campus.
The study of "Jewish Com-
munity in Transition" will
explore how trends in Jewish
population movements, the
growing professionalization
of the American middle class
generally, new modes of
youth communalism and
other community trends will
affect the future shape of

Decalogue:
for Men

Ever since Moses, the mak-
ing of decalogues goes on
without end. One of the most
appealing is by a psychoan-
alyst who is a loyal member

gogue in Detroit, once held
by the late, great martyr,

traditional place of the fam-

meaningful Jewish experi-

children.
The study on "The Jew on
Campus" will seek to deter-
mine the implications of this I
"neglected constituency" for
the synagogue and other I
Jewish institutions.

Morris Adler, and now by a
gifted successor, Rabbi Irwin
G r o n e r• The decaloguer's
name is Dr. Peter Martin and
this is what he wrote: it's for
men only.
I. Thou shalt love thy fam-
ily with all thy heart, and all
thy soul and all thy might.
II. Thou shalt thank God
daily that thou wast born a
Jewish man.
III. Thou shalt be knowl-
edgeable and proud of thy
Jewish heritage and shall
perpetuate it on to thy third
generation.
IV. Thou shalt love, re-
spect and protect thy wife,
both physically and spiritu-
ally.
V. Thou shalt love, respect
and protect thy children, and
spend time of high quality at
leisure with them every day.
VI. Thou shalt never close
illy mind. And because of
this thou shalt be willing to
grow and confront new re-
alities as they appear in thy
life, the life of thy family,
and the emergent new needs
of thy children.
VII. Thou shalt give they
children a set of values, not
by precept alone, but by ex-
ample so thou wilt be a
model to be admired, emu-
lated and obeyed.
VIII. Thou shalt dedicate
thyself to the spiritual and
physical survival of Judaism
that it shall never perish
from the face of the Earth.
IX. Thou shalt not allow a
Second Holocaust.
X. Thou shalt dedicate thy-
self to the existence of the
State of Israel.
