WSU Board OKs Tom Schram as Editor

The election of Tom
Schram, a senior journalism
major at Wayne State Uni-
versity, as editor of the cam-
pus newspaper was- con-
firmed last week by the stu-
dent newspaper publications
board. His appointment will
be effective July 1 for the

Schram has pledged to re-
turn the South End to "objec-
tive reporting" and to pro-
vide "complete campus news
coverage."
Gene Cunningham, who is
being replaced by Schram,
urged minority students to
boycott next year's South
End. He told a reporter that
"It may be necessary for
Blacks and Chicanos to de-
mand university funds to
start an alternative news-
paper that is sensative to
minority issues."

brew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion soon will
come to an end for three lo-
cal residents, Merrill Evan
(Chick) Marks, Steven C.
Kushner and Harold Camin-
ker.
Emphasis in this first-year
program is placed on the in-
tensive Hebrew language
course, preparaing the stu-
dents for study of Bible, Tal-
mud and many ancient texts
over the next five years. The
graduate program will lead
to ordination as rabbi and
the degree, doctor of Jewish
studies.
In conjunction with their
academic studies in Israel,
they have toured the country
and worked on kibutzim.
Each student also is offered
opportunities to puruse his
individual interests.
Marks is especially inter-
ested in archeology. In Is-
rael he has traveled exten-
sively, touring the numerous
ancient sites. He has had the
opportunity to take courses
in the Nelson Glueck School
ofi Biblical Archeology in
HUC's Jerusalem school.
Marks also is interested in
small group dynamics, guid-
ance and counseling and
evenutally hopes to work
with groups after his ordina-
tion.

Abrams of Detroit, he was
joined by his wife for the re-
mainder of the academic
year in Israel. On their re-
turn, Marks will Continue his
studies at the Cincinnati cam-
pus of HUC-JIR.
A graduate of Oakland Uni-
versity where he earned his
BA degree in sociology, he
is the son of Dr. and Mrs.
Bert Wayne Marks of Lin-
coln Dr., Huntington Woods.

Kushner w a s graduated
from Wayne State Univer-
sity last year, earning his BA
degree in history. He was ac-
tive in Sambatyon, college
youth organization sponsored
by the National Federation
of Temple Brotherhood, and
would like to continue work-
ing with young people after
completion of his rabbinic
training.
Kushner, who will continue
his rabbinic studies at the
Cincinnati school of HUC-
JIR, has a brother, Law-
rence, serving as la rabbi in
Sudbury, Mass.
The son of Aid and Miriam
Kushner of Oak Park, he is
the grandson of the late Max
Edwards, an active member
of Pisgah Lodge, Bnai Brith,
and a popular lecturer and
book reviewer.
Caminker also tutored En-
glish to Israeli students, but
not in Jerusalem. Each week
he traveled to the Ben She-
men Youth Village near Lod
and devoted an entire eve-
ning tutoring high school stu-
dents in English to apply for
entrance to the university.
He also was a vocalist in the
college's Zamir Chorale.
Before the fall term, he
worked in the only apple ci-
der factory in Israel at Ki-
butz Neot Mordechai in the
Upper Galilee.
