Potential Oil Sites Noted at Symposium

TEL AVIV—Possibilities of
finding crude oil in the Dead
Sea area, especially near
Ein Gedi, were reported at
a recent symposium initiated
by the Geological Institute
and the crude oil department
of the ministry of agriculture
and development.
Since 1948, IL 200,000,000
(almost $50 million) has been
invested in the search for oil,
although from a practical
point of view, the investment
was double this a moun t.

ment went to research.
Some of the findings and
evaluations presented at the
symposium include possibili-
ties of finding crude oil in
the Dead Sea area and in the
southern Negev. Drillings
are recommended in the
northwest Negev to deter-
mine possible oil sites.
There are some potential
oil sites in the Galilee. De-
spite negative findings in the
Jericho area, further re-
search in this region is rec-
ommended to determine sites

Encouraged by last year's response to its first UNICEF
Jewish New Year card, the U.S. Committee for UNICEF
is offereing two new designs for Rosh Hashana greetings
this year.
They are "Reaching" by prize-winning Canadian pho-
tographer Antoine Desilets and "Torch of Hope" by Henri
Matisse, the famous French post-impressionist.
The message imprinted on both cards in Hebrew calli-
graphy and English translation is "L'Shana Tova Tikatevu"
—"May the New Year Bring You Peace, Good Health and
Joy." Rosh Hashana will begin Sept. 27, ushering in the
year 5734 on Hebrew calendar.

Proceeds of sales will help the United Nations Chil-
dren's Fund to broaden the scope of its activities in the
fields of child nutrition, mother and child health, education
and the production of "safe water" which is so essential
to the eradication of disease.

"Reaching" will also be included in UNICEF's regular
greeting card collection this fall, with a border of "Peace"
in the five official United Nations languages or without
any message.

The first photographic art to be reproduced as a
UNICEF greeting card, Desilets' work conveys an im-
pression of man's attempt to extend his reach beyond his
grasp. Reaching for the sun, a radiant burst of light, three
silhouetted youths leave the confines of earth, perhaps re-
calling the Book of Job, whose author thousands of years
ago asked, "Canst thou attain the purpose of the Almighty?"
and answers, "It is as high as heaven;" (Job XI: 7-8).
Matisse's "Torch of Hope," the stylized yellow and
blue flame blazing on cream background which the artist
painted for the Children's Fund shortly before his death
in 1954, is one of the most popular UNICEF cards.
The two Rosh Hashana cards are available from the
