Methodist Fears Military Image Obstacle to Acceptance of Israel

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
Rabbinate Supreme Court
made short shift of mini-
skirts and issued a ruling
that a woman's dress should
be below the knees both
when standing and sitting.
"Covering the knees by
socks is not sufficient." the
ruling declared.
The ruling against mini-
skirts was issued upon the
request of the Jerusalem-
based "Committee for the
Defense of Sacred Jewish
Values."
The ruling was signed by
Chief Rabbi Joseph Ovadia

NEW YORK — A leading
Protestant interreligious auth-
ity believes that Israel's mili-
tary posture, while under-
standable, can become for
some Christians a stumbling
block toward acceptance of
the state.

United Methodist Church,
told a meeting of the com-
mission on interfaith activi-
ties of Reform Judaism, that
as Israel observes 25 years,
its international image in the
eyes of the world should shift
from "a military state to the
land and people of the Bible
—its real strength is its re-
ligious teachings and the
messengers of God's people."
Dr. Huston described a
growing anti-military stance
in certain Protestant circles
during the past five years.
He added, "while I fully
recognize that we cannot

ture with the American in-
volvement in Vietnam, many

Communal Projects
in Israel Assisted

JERUSALEM — World
Jewry outside the United
States has contributed $34,-
000,000 during the past 12
years toward the establish-
ment of 283 special commu-
nal projects in Israel. This
was above and beyond the
contributions of the same
people to the ongoing
appeals for Israel, it was an-
nounced in Jerusalem at a
countrywide meeting of
some 150 mayors and munic-
ipal officials by Ezra Z.
Shapiro, chairman of the
Keren Hayesod — United Is-
rael Appeal which is respon-
sible for fund raising on be-
half of Israel in 69 countries
throughout the world.
The contributions for the
283 projects were collected
by the Keren Hayesod in the
major Jewish communities
throughout the world, Shapiro
noted, on condition that they
did not affect the donor's
regular contributions to the
annual Keren Ha yesod
appeals.
