Former United States Displaced Persons Commissioner
Ugo Carusi, left, told the annual meeting of the New York
Association for New Americans that the 1948 DP Act was
"an entirely new approach" to immigration laws, which
allowed more than 400,000 refugees to enter this country
and make positive contributions to American life. Here,
Commissioner Carusi listens as Mrs. Soprie Udell, NYANA
president, congratulates Monroe Goldwater, right, former
president of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New
York, on the special NYANA award presented to him "in
recognition of a lifetime of service to his fellow-Jews."
NYANA receives the funds for its casework, vocational
and educational services as well as financial assistance to
Jewish newcomers in the New York area from the UJA.
