NEW YORK (JTA)—Rabbi
Moshe Portnoy, spiritual
leader of the Elmhurst Jew-
ish Center in the Queens sec-
tion of New York, reported
that antique religious objects
stolen May 27 were found
miles away on the Lower
East Side of the city.
Rabbi Portnoy told the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency
that Anthony Taddeo, a parks
department employe, called
the synagogue several days
ago and said he found a car-
ton and suitcase in Tompkins
Square Park with a number
of silver objects.
"He evidently read about
the robbery in the newspa-
pers and called to tell me
about his find." Rabbi Port-
noy said. "Every object, ex-
cept a silver ornament for
the Torah, was there. Mr.
Taddeo didn't know what he
had found but assumed that
these were the objects that
had been taken from our sy-
nagogue."
The items, brought out of
Nazi Germany by members
of the congregation, includ-
ed three silver ornamental
crowns and four silver point-
ers.
Rabbi Portnoy said that the
congregation, delighted with
the return of the items, has
invited Taddeo to the syna-
gogue Sunday to participate
in a United Jewish Appeal
cocktail hour.

Sou th fie ld

The German people would
have to have had an IQ of 40
to follow the fuehrer por-
trayed in "Hitler: the Last
10 Days," now on the screen.
Alec Guinness gives us a
pathological idiot—hardly the
evil genius whose oratory
hypnotized nations into doing
his maniacal bidding.
Yet, a witness swears that
the film depicts him as he
was — going about his little
tasks, playing soldier when
any soldier would have
known to surrender; playing,
father to his fawning cour-
tiers when. in reality, he
cared only for himself.
Through the use of brown-
white photography to lend
documentary authority, the
film shuttles between the
horrible reality of Berlin 1945
and — in color — the charade
being played out in Hitler's
bunker beneath 60 feet of
concrete.
There. he celebrates his
56th birthday, surrounded by
his conspirators — Bormann,
Goebbels; what was left of
his generals—Krebs, Keitel;
his devoted, vacuous mistress
—Eva Braun; and the other
sundry Aryans who bathed
in the light shed by their
fuehrer.
There are some choice
lines, like this one from
Eva Braun: "What a pity for
the world you couldn't have
devoted your life to art." Or
this one from Hitler, who
stops Eva from destroying
photos of him as they prepare
for the end: "I don't want
to happen to me what hap-
pened to Christ." After all,
he says, isn't it a shame no
one really knows what Jesus
looked like?
