Honors Founding Rabbi

Ma -or Common Council Salute i
Rabbi Schnipper on Anniversary

More than 300 congregants
and friends of Rabbi A. Irv-
ing Schnipper paid tribute
to the spiritual leader of
Cong. Beth Moses Sunday.
The testimonial dinner. cit-
ing a decade of progress un-
der his leadership, included
among its highlights the pre-
sentation of the key to the
city of Detroit and a mayor-
al proclamation read by
Common Councilman Carl
Levin.
The proclamation from
Mayor G r i b b s described
Rabbi Schnipper as "a man
who has always done so
much for so many and asked
nothing in return." A "heart-
felt mazel toy" to the rabbi
was extended in the Common
Council resolution, which not-
ed that Beth Moses is the
one major Conservative con-
gregation remaining in De-
troit and expressed hopes
that it would remain "many
more years."
Paul Silver of the Wayne
County Board of Commis-
sioners also read a resolu-
tion signed by all his fellow
commissioners.
In greetings extended by
Rabbi Benjamin Gorrelick,
the rabbi emeritus of Cong.
Beth Achim recalled the con-
gregation's simple b e g i n-
nings, holding services in the
basement of the present
structure, and he saluted the
progress of the 275-member
congregation under Rabbi
Schnipper's leadership. De-
scribing the honoree, Rabbi
Gorrelick said he knew "of
no other Jew endowed with
a warmer heart—the wonder-
ful trait of compassion and
quality of heart."

In response, Rabbi Schnip-
per called his relationship
with Beth Moses ''a true
marriage between the con-
gre7ation and myself" and
added that "the unsung
heroes of the congre'gation
are my daily minyan. Any
synagogue that can't have a
daily minyan and an evening
minyan is poor. We ( Beth
Moses) are very wealthy: we
have a daily minyan, an eve-
ning minyan, a Sunday morn-
ing minyan—the whole shmi-
er."
Shelby Newhouse narrated
a presentation of "Memories
in Music" with Cantors Sho-
lom Kalib and Louis Klein.
Harry Shiovitz, president of
the Beth Moses. extended the
greetings of the congrega-
tion and presented a citation
and gift to Rabbi and Mrs.
Schnipper and their family.
Others on the program
were Franklin Levy, chair-
man of the dinner; Kalman
Bruss, program chairman;
Harold Hurvitz and Mrs.
Dan Weisswasser, presidents
of the men's club and sis-
terhood, respectively; Hyman
Schnipper, brother of the
rabbi; and Daniel Schnip-
per, the rabbi's son.
Mrs. Harry Shiovitz was
chairman of arrangements.

Do not consider a thing as
proof because you find it
written in books; for just as
a liar will deceive with his
tongue, he will not be de-
terred from doing the same
thing with his pen. They are
utter fools who accept a thing
as convincing proof simply
because it is in writing.

People's Survival
If the land is destroyed and
the people is full of life and
strength, a Zerubavel, Ezra
or Nehemia will arise from it
with the people behind them
and they will return and re-
build it; but if the people is
destroyed, who will arise for
it and from whence cometh
its help? — Ahad Ha'am,
