Yiddish Journalist

NEW YORK-David Shub,
author of a classic biography
of Lenin, died Sunday at age
85.
Mr. Shub, an authority on
the Russian Revolution, had
been on the editorial staff of
the Jewish Daily Forward
for 45 years until his retire-
ment in 1969. He had con-
tributed many articles in
Yiddish and Russian to vari-
ous journals.
His book, "Lenin: a Bio-
graphy," was regarded as a
pioneering work on Lenin,
whom he knew before the
1905 revolution. It was first
published in 1948 and again
in 1966 in many languages.
Shub joined the revolution-
ary movement at age 16
when he was a student in
Vilna. He met Lenin in
Geneva while living abroad
in 1904. Shub joined the Men-
shevik (Sbcial Democratic)
branch of the party and re-
turned to Russia to partic-
ipate in the 1905 revolution.
Arrested, he was sent to
Siberia but escaped and came
to the U.S. in 1908.
He kept in touch with Rus-
sian revolutionaries and be-
came acquainted with Leon
Trotsky, a future Communist
leader.

Hospital, where he died.
Born in Stanislawtchik,
Ukraine, he joined the Zion-
ist youth movement at age
13 and later became an ac-
tive member of the then il-
legal halutz movement in the
Soviet Union. Mr. Fleiman
was arrested twice for his
Zionist activities and exiled
in 1929 to Siberia.
In 1930, he was expelled
from the Soviet Union and
came to Palestine where he
worked in the Palestine
Electric Corp, as an unskill-
ed laborer. He gradually rose
to the rank of director of the
company and was subse-
quently elected to represent
management in its negotia-
tions with the workers.
He was elected to the
Haifa Town Council in 1950,
was elected deputy mayor in
1955 and permanent deputy
mayor in 1959.
He was appointed mayor
in 1968 after Mayor Abba
Khoushi died.
